So, I needed some accelerator…

So, I needed some accelerator…
As most of you know who have seen my build threads, I don’t have much patience for sitting around waiting for glue to dry. I go through a fair bit of accelerator and CA glue. So, since I was having dinner with my wife, I stopped by the hobby shop to get a large refill bottle of accelerator as well as a roll of Circus Pink Monokote (As an aside, avoid using Neon Pink Monokote. The stuff is horrid).
When I walked in, the guy in the car department saw me and called out, “Hey! You like old engines, right? What do you think of this stuff?” So I walked over to see what he had. The first thing I saw was this:
I asked how much and he said he didn’t know. He was looking it up on eBay to set a price. He said make an offer. I offered him $75 and he said, “Okay“. The next thing I saw was this:
He said make an offer and I said $25. He said, “Sure.” Looking through the box, it also had these engines:
A nice Fox 35 control line engine, a clean Fox .29 R/C engine, an O&R engine of unknown size with some missing parts, and a Cox car engine.
The box also had an old starter, a 2½ ounce Perfect tank, a couple of glow plugs, a bottle of unidentified thimbles, a couple of wheels, and a set of landing gear from some Cox airplane. So, all totaled, I got the following for $125.00. One of the glow plugs even glowed.
Anyone have any ideas what these ferrules are for? They’re not C/L thimbles, and they’re all different colors.

Score buddy! Holy Cow color me green.
To me the tether car alone was worth the $125. Have fun with those, if you want to sell that Tether I am a PM away, I won't hold my breath though

I'd suggest dressmaker's eyelets, or maybe for shoes. (Cobblers)
Great score on the stuff. That's the sort of thing we all dream about. I bet that guy went home and looked things up on ebay and now regrets the sale

With the correct tool the clothing eyelets become eyelets for whatever you need. They are also usable as lead out guides. I am sure there are many more uses.

FWIW, Mark, from the size comparison in the pix, the O&R appears to be either a .19 or .23.
There's usually several on eBay but prop drive/washer/nut are commonly missing on 'em.

That's what I'd call being in the right place at the right time!! Nice haul for sure!
I think what pkrankow said is correct, those eyelets can be anything you want starting with lead out guides.

Re: So, I needed some accelerator…
Yeah, I have a whole bullion cube jar full of brass ones. 3/16" ID or so. I've used them for leadout guides a few times, and control rod guides back when I used flexy metal rods. CF rods eliminate that need.Marleysky wrote:That's what I'd call being in the right place at the right time!! Nice haul for sure!

That is an interesting Champion car you got there, someone stuffed a McCoy in there.
From the outside it looks like a nice, neat job. I wonder how he did the drivetrain.
A little restoration would make it a real looker.

Re: So, I needed some accelerator…
Since most of the stainless steel cables used with larger C/L planes are terminated with eyelets, you can use yours for the same purpose. Normally, crimp tools are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most craft or sewing locations (likely at Walmart, too). I have a crimping punch that I use with an arbor press.
If you're going to terminate cables and have colored eyelets, use one color on both ends of the same cable and a different color on the other. Then you can be consistent in connecting the cables, i.e., red always goes on the down line and green is always used on the up line, for example. Once connected to the plane, your handle always connects in the same manner, red on the bottom and green on the top. It just adds a little peace of mind if you're flying alone with a stooge or release.
