Control line question

Control line question
This may be a silly question coming from someone that sells this stuff, but what is the correct length of the line for flying .049 airplanes?
Re: Control line question
If you're looking to have some made.. maybe 90' on a spool would be a good length. It varies widely by the model. Cox ARF's wouldn't use as much length as a flying-wing with a Tee Dee. Generally I'd say between 30-40 feet.. but I've flown with shorter than that.
Re: Control line question
As Roddie stated, 30 to 40 feet, sometimes as short as 25 for some of the heavy under powered Cox RTF's like the Super Sport II or as long as 42 for the meaty fast models. The Cox PT-19 flew on 30 feet if I recall correctly. The Sig 1/2A skyray flies on no more than 35' since it is so light It really depends on performance, weight and what you plan to do with it. Hope this helps man (Bandit)

The instruction sheet for the Pt-19 trainer shows a 25 ft diameter circle. As the others have chimed in at 35 ft or more with a more flight worthy aircraft. It has been a number of decades since I flew a "new" Cox model, but don't you still offer those thimbles of Dacron line that was included with the models? How much line are on one of those?

Re: Control line question
bernie I have lines made for
25'
35'
40'
42' and even managed (by not paying attention) to fly a TeeDee/ lil hacker out on a set of 52' lines but the light breeze was a bear to handle until it ran out of fuel...grin

Re: Control line question
I have 3 sets of Spectra lines for various planes and wind conditions, 35', 40' and 45'. My 42' sets are .008" steel.
I use the Dacron for stitching hinges, pre-stretched, and other utilitarian things.

That would be 25' radius, not diameter. (I just looked at the instruction sheet.) I think 25' diameter would be a little fast.

Re: Control line question
Bernie,
Standard accepted length is usually 35', as you can see from the answers it's a loaded question as many factors influence line length.
Why don't you build a model and give it a try? It's fun and you can learn all about what we do, the knowledge gained can only help your business.

Re: Control line question
I'd love to hear about you flying Bernie! I was assuming though that you were thinking on offering an alternate line choice.
I'd like to see 15#/90' length synthetic braid on a cardboard reel. A one-model line kit. Maybe sell it for $4.. or $6 with line-connectors? The user would have the option for up to a 45 foot 1/2A line set.. or maybe two sets for 1/4A?

Re: Control line question
I think that's a great idea other than the 1/4 scale I think would be too heavy >>> My Reed Speed was flying at 65mph on fishing conn. So to help promote safety the connectors would bee a ++++ getbackroddie wrote:I'd love to hear about you flying Bernie! Not 1/4-scale Eric.. What I meant by 1/4A was for .020 engine size and smaller. You could make two sets of 22' lines from a 90' reel. I'll bet that 10# braided synthetic would work well for 1/4A. If you could buy a 50' reel.. it would yield one set of up to 25' lines.
There's 110yds. (330') on a reel of "Spider-Wire". That's enough for 4 sets of 41' 1/2A line. (82x4=328.. I think I did that right.. )
Sorry if I hurt anybody's brain.. I hated mathematics as a kid.
Re: Control line question
Thanks to everyone for the enlightening answers.
We are not looking at adding alternative control line to our offerings as we still have over 20,000 of the 54' Dacron spools here
A customer posed the length question and we realized that we did not have an appropriate answer handy.
We did begin building a C/L plane here but then bought pallets of Cox merchandise, which we finally finished listing last Friday; a quite time-consuming task. The next couple of weeks I will be buried with admin stuff and will then be out of country for 5 weeks, but the plan is to finish the model in April and get out there to fly

Fly over grass. Crashing does much less damage that way.

Rod, Thanks for the correction. I like Roddie, in his post, did not get mathematics. When the teacher was talking about circumference, radius and Pi, I drifted off to pie, ummm, apple, pecan, chocolate....when IS lunch anyhow?? :lol!

Gosh Here is the A for 1/4 A scale .008 would bee enough for the 010 - 020 size without a lot of drag!
