So, I'm heading into town a couple evenings ago, and get a call from an old prairie dog shooting bud of mine who I hadn't talked to in ten years or so.

Frank has never been over generous with words, and the call was typical of our past conversations, "Kim, we're over here at the storage place next to Orschelns...we got a bunch of model airplanes that are going in the dumpster if you don't take them.  We got to have this thing empty before tomorrow."

Regaining control of the Assault Van, I replied, "On My Way!"

Well, there WAS a BUNCH.  The locker had been rented by the family of a local business man who'd passed away a while back, and Frank and his friend were clearing out the last of his personal effects.  My van was gradually filled with relics of the 1960-70's...mostly REALLY ragged airframes with just a few engines still bolted to some.

Like most of the modelers of the 60's, this guy was a hard-core builder.  His models were exquisitely-built...there's not a pin-hinge to be found...all control surfaces are precisely stitched and still working.
 
Most are single channel R/C, with pulse, escapement, and at least one Rand or Hall 'Galloping Ghost' actuator.  Those were days before it was normal for R/Cr's to own multiple systems, and several of the fuselages have carefully crafted fixtures to allow the actuator to be easily slid into place, so it could be quickly swapped between planes.  I only spotted one huge four-wire servo, imbedded in a wing.  

No transmitters...probably casualties of earlier clean-ups.  Several beautifully built, but severely damaged gumband models and freeflights, that looked to have had some long-term shed storage before going to the locker.

I was trying to stack them as carefully as possible, on top of some woodworking gear I already had in the van, as Frank kept bringing out the dust-covered carcasses.  Wings and wings and wings, with fuselages stacked in there like so much firewood.

We finally got the model airplane stuff all loaded, in the now total darkness.  Frank and his helper refused my offer for a dinner...they were gonna stay on the job till the locker was bare...but did take rainchecks for some point in the future.

I hoofed it down to the airport to use a lighted hangar for a preliminary inspecting of all this stuff, and spread it across the floor.  Apparently, most of the engines had been previously sold, adopted, or chucked, but there were still a few left....all well-stuck and covered with crud.  A couple Pee Wee engines, a Tee Dee .020, a Medallion .049, two exhaust-choke O.S. .10's and, stuck to the nose of an unfinished Jetco Thermic 36, a lightly used Jetex 50 rocket motor.

Save for a couple fixable airframes (like I need more new projects anyway), and a couple new-in-box kits, the silk and silkspan covered frames are probably gonna be given a Viking Funeral out back of the Skunk Works.  The Thermic MIGHT be savable, along with a pylon-engine sport model, and I'll probably take several photos of the rest for posting here or my own late-night 'How It Was' viewing, or maybe haranguing some spoiled youngsters with how good they have it now (yes...I've officially made it to "Curmudgeon Territory").

Still got some stuff to go through, and I'll post some of it here.  The "Spookyness" comes from looking around my own shop, and the loud realization that some day, somebody's gonna be sorting through my gear...or outright trashing it.  I'm always aware of it...just deals like this tend to drive it home.

HOLY CRAP !! glad you didn't wreak turning to the destination lol nice haul FREEEEEBEE !!! AND I KNOW WHAT YOU SAY SOME DAY but until then get out there, and what you going to do with that Jet-x 50 ? any pills for that baby all I have is fuse that came in a lot LOL . Would love to see one of those up and running all you ever hear is about them Shocked I am sure knowing you , you did think the previous owner in your own way Pray Eric Biplane

Kim....NO need to apologize for the novel. I sure enjoy hearing about someones lucky find or super good deals like yours. It is nice to know you that  have friends who know of (y)our affliction and are willing to help feed it. I know I've thought about going into competition with the person who has a continuous add placed on Craigslist "Wanted your Old Cox Models  Let me help you clean out your attic of those old broken plastic cars and planes."....I've always wondered how much response they get from them adds. Then I look around my shop/garage and think to myself, IF I did get a bunch (more) stuff...where you gonna put it?? Ha, ha ha  Yeah, I haven't build the kits I bought last year.....gotta get back into the build 'em , fly 'em, crash 'em, fix 'em and fly 'em again mode.
Congratulations on your "Saved from the Dumpster"  deal.. still  I may be interested in what you have to post as extra stuff . Laughing

Hi Kim, As the emperor of lost causes here I would like to take a couple of C/L airframes (if there were any) or GG with or without power off your hands if you willing to pack them. Naturally I would pay postage plus a finders fee. I would hate to see them go all Gandhi.

Those engines look pretty healthy, I love finds like that. I don't, however, care to be given a load of old beatup planes. I have a couple that I plan to re-do as soon as I get a round tuit.

I have more frequent days lately, when I'm acutely aware of my own mortality, so its no coincidence this was one of them before I read your post. Funny, they can come at you from many directions. I hereby demand, on behalf of all people who live for fun, we be given an extension that shall not expire until we are tired of having fun!

Yeah Eric, actually the whole thing's got a weird kind of reverence to it...'course I can be fairly wierd any given day...but this isn't even sorting through another man's property, I'm looking right into the stuff that made him tick.

Luckily, no one's around when I'm saying out loud, "Yeah, I see why you did that..." or otherwise complimenting and appreciating all these carefully built airframes. Makes a guy pity those who call these things 'toys'.

And yes, by way of even more wierdness, I have, stuck away somewhere, a package of Dare Brand power pellets and fuse. Years ago, I had tried them in the 50 that Uncle Wayne gave me, but the power was real sporadic, and I went on to other things. I may give them another shot, and WILL video the attempt despite the outcome (grenading, rear end blowout or such)

Marleysky and Fred...this was one wild deal for me. I just recently took a spur-of-the-moment run to a Swap Meet in Effingham, Illinois ('bout 200 miles one way). The seller turnout was WAY low, and I ended up buying some consolation servo wire and a couple hot dogs and sodas from the slightly dejected club memnbers runnning the concessions. 400 fruitless miles, but it DID get me out of the house.

To be called out of the blue for something like this IS like the Model Guy's Holy Grail, but DOES show that there's STILL stuff out there, and how important it is get out the word that you're into such stuff.

Hey Bob, I for sure won't be needing the GG actuator...can't remember the condition of it's plane at the moment, but you'll be welcome to it for the cost of getting it to you. I'll be posting a bunch of photos, and we can sort it out by way of P.M so you'll know what you're getting.

Didn't see single CL kit or plane, but will let you know if there's one in the pile.

Yeah, probably gonna try a test run on the Jetex. The O.S.'s ARE .10's...I've already got them cleaned up a bit and run.

Kim: Some guys have all the luck... What else can I say. Best wishes with the Cox Tee Dee .020. I loved the one I had, but needed to sell it. As well as most of the rest of the Cox engines I have. If you get a chance to measure the crankcase and crankshaft for the Medallion .049 I would like to add the data to the spreadsheet I made a few months back.

crankshaft: prop end to crankshaft flat

crankcase: maximum length prop end to rear end flats.
