Does the case have the starter spring groove? Also is there a number on the cylinder? If so it's probably newer then '62 up to when the lettering appeared on tank backplate '65-67'(?) ....HELP MUD!!!!!

The 'pinned' venturi screen appeared some time around '61-'62. Here's a photo of a Babe Bee removed from a Cox 1911 Curtis. The screen was wedged in place.

WARNING: WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE MAY BE DISTURBING!

WTB: Correct Crankcase for '58 Babe Bee - Page 2 Crank10

Corroded 1956 Babe Bee crankcase, this is clearly the only reason why it is not on the original engine.

WTB: Correct Crankcase for '58 Babe Bee - Page 2 Crank110

No oil groves and you can also see there is no spring grove. Yes, the case cracked and broke apart when one of the screws was being removed, even after several other steps were being taken to remove the tight screw.

WTB: Correct Crankcase for '58 Babe Bee - Page 2 Unders10

Corroded right through the case!

WTB: Correct Crankcase for '58 Babe Bee - Page 2 Visibl10

Got a question, is my needle valve correct? I do remember having to replace it years ago. Looks like some have a larger diameter thumb screw.

So, this IS the mystery case Travis is trying to replace?

According to the catalogs the Civil Air Patrol Super Cub 105 was made from '59-'60

WTB: Correct Crankcase for '58 Babe Bee - Page 2 59coxc11

This is the correct engine, pressed in venturi screen, no lettering on the tank, no starter groove. It's basically the same as the 1911 Curtis.

Lol, Travis, next time give us a little more info from the start, it would of been a lot easier, but then again not as much fun!!!!

That would be it, but it was Yellow/Red. I don't know if it's a 105 or 150. My cousin said his dad got it in ~1958, he didn't think it would have been in the 1962 when the 150 came out.

For the life of me, I can't remember if the engine was up or down. My cousin thinks down.

Mark

Geez, I'm trying. I went back and reread that post as well. If the Cub was purchased new in '58 it would have been the all yellow 105 and the back plate would be wrong. The Super Cub didn't go to up right cylinder until '61-'62

Lets start over, what are you trying to do? And lets keep it on one thread.

I want to restore my Uncle's Babe Bee that was in his Yellow/Red Cub. The Cub is long gone and this is all that is left. I've had it since my early teens, before he died.

Hi Travis,

No, that's fine, thanks for clarifying. I think we're on the same 'page' (no pun....ok maybe)

Look at the above photos, it's actually a engine I took out of a basket case Civil Air patrol Cub for your photos. There is no Groove on case, the venturi screen is pushed in place, not pinned. The Super Cub C.A.P. is a '105' and was made from '59 to '60

The engine you have was more then likely assembled from different parts by your uncle back in the day as the tank and case are both incorrect for a 105. That was common thing, as a kid I was always tinkering with different Babe Bee parts. I'd keep the engine as it is, as your uncle built it. Several years ago I found a slot car I had 'customized' as a kid, I ended up taking parts off of it...now I wished I would of left it alone as it was back in 1969!

P.S.
I'm planning to list the yellow/blue C.A.P. Super Cub 105 on eBay Sunday night with no reserve and a starting bid of $1

Post  WingingIt74 on Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:41 pm

Would a 150 have the right tank?

See, this is where I don't remember if the engine was right-side up or up-side down, which I hadn't seen in 25 years, since I was ~13.

Back in the day I had (3) 049s, one from a white PT-19, one from a F-15 and this one out of the yellow Cub. I ended up taking all 3 of them apart and putting the better parts together. For the PT-19 and F-15, neither one would of had a pusher case from the factory, so I can only assume it was from the Cub. However, the Cub didn't originally come with a pusher case. So, I'm not quite sure where the pusher case came from.

Was there a Yellow/Red 150, as that would narrow it down quite a bit?

Last I seen the Cub, I went to go spend a few weeks in Kansas with my Aunt, Uncle and 2 cousins. While up there, my cousin gave me the Cub. He had at one time broke the vertical stab, so he glued on a yellow stab, which resembled more of a Cessna slant tail. I remember wanting to fly the Cub, so we tried to get it to start. It wouldn't, so I remember calling the hobby shop and asking them why it wouldnt' run, and they told me it was most likely the needle valve (this was probably the first time I actually talked to somebody on the phone that wasn't family). We all went the hobby shop and bought a new needle, as the old one was not seating right. Afterwards, we noticed that the clear firewall was shot and we took the engine out and trashed the plane. I brought the engine back with me and was planning on building a control-line plane for it. I believe it was a LiL Jumping Bean, but my building skills where horrible and I never finished it. Some where down the line the other 2 cases ended up missing as I no longer have them.

A few years later, my Uncle was killed in a bicycle/car accident. He was riding his bicycle to work and a lady ran into him from behind. She didn't see him as the sun was in her eyes. My cousin at the time was ~16, so I had to be ~14.

Jumping to this year, I found my old engine and decided to show my 2 boys how it was back in the day. Which eventually led me here conversing with all you great folks. I invited my cousin down from Kansas for Christmas and while he was down here, I fired up his dad's engine for him to see.

I would like to make the engine period correct as a runner, in memory of my Uncle, which is the reason why I still have the motor all these years.

It's possible the backplate could have been from a '62 or '63, 150 with upright cylinder, it the closest part to what were talking about? In 1964 the 150 had a seperate fuel tank.

No, all 150's were reddish orange with cream trim.

The clear plastic windshield/ motor mount seemed to break pretty easy. I hear there now made out of "unobtainium"

Ok, that means it was a Yellow/Red 105.

I am not sure how the engine became an odd ball. I think my Uncle only flew the plane once or twice when he was a boy. I doubt that he would have replaced the parts with newer, but who knows.

Is there a possible way the 105 could of had that back plate? Maybe a end-of-run production before the 150?

Would the PT-19 ever of been put together, from COX, with a pusher case?

I've mostly focused my hobby on 1/2a engines and plastic planes from the early fifties to mid seventies. I think there was a 'pusher' case (with hex brass thrust plate) made for the Wild Wings series, sometime around '85-'87, but I think it was also used on tractors as well. The only pusher Cox made prior to that was a the 'kit' 1911 Curtis and that was the same Babe Bee case.

Hmm, I kinda vaguely remember one of the tank firewall mounts broke. If so, I might of replaced the back plate. Which could be the reason why it doesn't match.

Actually, I know I did, it's coming back to me. I bought it around the same time as the throttle sleeve.

Now, where did the pusher case come from???
