"Rise of the Drone" Empty "Rise of the Drone"

So, my former part-time employer, Mitch (owner of Tailwinds Hobby Center), wanted to try some air-to-air video with his drone, and became one of the first guest pilots to share airspace on the hill.

I was looking forward to some high-def footage of my 3 meter B.O.T. cruising the sky and gliding gracefully to a landing in my front yard strip, but it was not to be this time around.   I let thing get away from me and pick a fight with a steel fence post...which it lost quite handily !!  On short final, the east wind (kinda rare here), spilling across the barn and trees, tipped the B.O.T. up on it's right wing, and the resulting turn put it behind the cedar tree...where it encountered the fence post!

The B.O.T. was packing a GoPro on each wing tip, and the one on the left wing was chucked into the weeds...found a while later with the help of the OTHER GoPro, which conveniently recorded it's departure, and gave us an idea of where to look.

I REALLY shouldn't have been making those jokes about busting the B.O.T.'s right wing to match the repair on it's left...

Guess I ought to buy myself some orange Monokote...

"Rise of the Drone" 2_14

So....the 2 meter B.O.T. was hauled out, fueled, and had a GoPro stuck to it's nose.  The little glider had a lot more luck than it's big brother, and we shot several flights before sunset.  We need to work on our coordination, and need a slower plane.  The B.O.T.'s screaming Tee Dee had it blasting around Mitch's drone, so the next time out, I'll be flying Mud Dabber, my Sig Kadet Mark I at a lot more leisurely pace.

The B.O.T.'s GoPro photo of Mitch's drone:

Gonna crunch a video of the best stuff...we've still got some work to do to get some closer shots, but it was a lot of fun.

Aw, my poor baby, my favorite RC plane ever, so sorry. I hope there's no hidden internal damage and you can get her back in action this Summer. Ain't that typical for trying to show somebody something you've talked up. I'll be looking forward to the video.

Yeah...mostly my pride (and the Big B.O.T.'s leading edge) hurt!  I just fixed it's 'tail wobble' by replacing the brass tubing bearing in it's stabilator a couple nights ago!  Everything looks easily fixable, though the thought DOES keep entering my mind that maybe it''s time for a new B.O.T. and retire this old girl...she's seen a lot of war in her 10+ years of flying off the hill!

I was able to redeem myself somewhat with good landings from the 2 meter B.O.T. for the rest of the evening.  Of course, it's had bad moments out in the yard before:

The Good News is that I think I have now accumulated enough material for a video titled: 'The Skunk Works' Greatest Hits" !   Got a song picked out that I GOT to use, but may have to go with pirate DVD's since I don't want to get fussed at by You Tube again...

What's all that white stuff on the ground? It looks like you are landing on the beach.

Trust me...'there weren't NEAR as much friction as landing on a beach!!'

But, all is good:

So, couldn't have my main Big Dog laying around broken, and decided to use a hot, windy Sunday to retreat to the shop and fix it's busted wing.

That is one tough aeroplane and it didn't look too much fuss to repair it.

Just from the videos you have posted, that aeroplane certainly has considerable air time on it and it is ready to fly again.

Excellent model.

Thank you Ian...I've certainly gotten my money's-worth from it. Wish I'd
kept the original receipt to have an idea of when I got it. I high-started it for several years before building the power pod so I could fly it from the front yard...hilly country isn't friendly to having a high-start strung across it.

Hey Eric,

A "High Start", and a smaller version sometimes refereed to as a"Quick Start', is a length of surgical tubing--some 30 feet long---anchored to the ground on one end, with a length of cord---some 300 feet on the other.  There's a s,mall chute or streamer with a ring at the end of the cord, which catches a hook on the sailplane's belly.

With the cord and surgical tubing stretched out, the sailplane is launched with it nose pointed up, and is accelerated into the sky as the at the rubber tubing draws it in.  It's often confused with a catapult, but with much more gradual acceleration, just like launching a kite.

As the glider goes over the top, the streamer or chute pulls the ring off the glider's hook (and, with a breeze, also helps lay out the high-start downwind for another launch) as the glider heads out to find thermals.  You got to have everything a safe distance from trees, and powerlines in particular!

I somehow never got around to videoing our high-start launches, but there are a bunch on You Tube, and also "The Old Buzzard" Dave Thornburg's hilarious and educational video "The Old Buzzard Goes Soaring".

I did convert this from some old Hi-8 video tape, showing a Thermic Trooper and a tiny High-Start I made from a length of Sig rubber and carpet thread.  No soaring, but it shows how it works.

Using a hill for sailplane flying is called 'Slope Soaring' and requires a (preferably) steady breeze encountering an abrupt slope, with the sailplane riding the rising air out front like a surfer on the face of a wave:
