020 Glow Heads

020 Glow Heads
Anyone know anything about the above?
Reason is I've got a couple Pee Wees and TD's with slightly differing heads but..
Young Fred from Texas kindly sent me two old TD (I think) types which are
knurled like the bigger TD's are and have an earth shattering 48 cents
price tag.
Anyone else familiar with them?

Yep, the knurling was an early idea. Not high compression like I originally thought.
Re: 020 Glow Heads
packages I sent John had Cox on front
COX
29 10320: .90
on back of card and a store stick on price tag of $.48

Re: 020 Glow Heads
Knurling was present on all early 020 heads and on no later .020 heads.
The only difference between pee wee and tee dee heads was the combustion chamber volume and size.
Only visible from the inside.

Re: 020 Glow Heads
I've been having a bit of a play around with a TD Indra
I think pound for pound it may be the most impressive
Cox I've yet run up. I think the 051 is vast but it is
Twice the size.
Any idea when they switched? I've got early Seventies
And they have the smooth type.

I have this problem occasionally (Not that I get much NIP stuff) but then I think "These things were meant to FLY, not sit in a museum!"

Re: 020 Glow Heads
I'm sort of torn between the 2 poles Wilf.
Happily/tragically my lovely new in box stuff
Is gradually getting fired up.
As one of the 'usual suspects' said to me
Recently "John, I love guys like you because you're
Steadily increasing the value of my 'never will be run'
Stuff".

Re: 020 Glow Heads
I have opened several OEM packages and used the parts. Some very old.

Value is a funny thing......
Monetarily yes, NIP has more value. However, the real value is to those who get to play with it.

It's the difference between price and value, as someone said to me once "Price is what someone is stupid enough to pay for it, value is what it's really worth!"

Re: 020 Glow Heads
Is the TD 020 head noticeably trumpet shaped? I can remember (from the 60's) buying some glowheads that were, and thought it was all TD's.
But then recently I got back into planes and bought a TD 051. The head (and spare I got from Bernie) was more or less hemispherical.
Maybe I'm just imaging things??

Re: 020 Glow Heads
As was correctly pointed out, Cox in later years did away with the TD version and used the regular heads on Tee Dee and Pee Wee.
The .020 heads we manufactured are somewhere in between TD and PW in regards to the combustion chamber shape. Reports show that they increase the RPM on a PW over stock head.
On the TD they also increase RPM compared to non-TD heads and compare favourably to the old TD heads.
