Thin-walled tanks? Empty Thin-walled tanks?

Just out of interest, has anyone ever had a problem with a tank that had a too thin wall towards the crankcase?

My very first glow engine (some 30 years ago) required all of my savings at the time, and then I ended up with a poorly machine tank. I was only 12-13 years old at the time and it took me very long time to sort this out, could have ended my RC adventures right there. Since then I have never seen any other tank like this, just how unlucky can one get...?

Here is the tank and the "solution" to the problem;

First time I have ever seen something like that. I guess it was made on a Friday lol! Pretty ingenious fix for a 12yr old. At 12 I would have just sent it back to Santa Anna.

I guess that would have taken more time than you wanted to wait.

From the look of the tear I think it crashed to do the damage. What happened?

That is really thin metal.

Thin-walled tanks? Empty RE;Thin walled tanks?

I wouldn't underestimate the kinetic forces at play from a fast crash on a hard surface. I have two TD .049/.051 Red plastic tank mounts that took some really hard hits. One has both mounting arms snapped off even with the tank and the other has the tank itself broken by the rear of a TD crankcase. I got them separately in two swap meet bags of parts and in both cases the owners said that the TD,s were really trashed by the crashes. FWIW

The front is so thin that it must have had a crack there straight from the box. I bench ran it and it wouldn't hold a needle setting. I did try too fly it few times but never had any major crashes, and the plane is still intakt too. Thinking that there was a leak I would tighten the screws and then it leaked even more, and when I took it appart the tank was already close to being in two pieces. The front is really wafer thin...
