How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Hello everybody
My two Pee Wees have different cylinders, one is the thin-walled kind and the other is the thick-walled.
while looking around on the web I seem to find at least another external cylinder shape, one wich has different thickness close to the crankcase..
I know the all-thin one was the earlier kind while the thick-wall kind is the later kind.. where does this two-thicknesses one sits?
Are there differences in performances or whatever between the different kinds?
thin walled
thick walled
two-thickness walled
thanks for your attention!
Andrea

Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Hello,
The thinned walled cylinder: 1956-'70 (+/-)
'Stepped' wall cylinder: (appx.) 1969-'75 (Ryan ST w/ throttle)
Thick wall cylinder: 1975 on, production stopped 1996 (R.I.P.)
(Note: starting about 1980-'81, the Pee Wee went to a single fill vent on back plate.)

Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Does anyone know how many original Cox factory produced .020 Pee Wee color variations were created and what were the colors?
Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
They were either with red tank and red prop driver or silver tank with silver prop driver.
The plastic backplate was yellow for the skycopter and red for the Ryan ST-3/PT-20 planes.

Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Yep, the red anodized engines were 'hobby' engines, the Pee Wees that came in a airplane ('product' engine) were not anodized.
However, i've seen more than a couple anodized Pee Wees on the F-100 Super Sabre, c. 1958, don't think i've seen one on Li'l Stinker.
Other notes:
Non tapered case- early 70's (some say '70, others '72)
"Thimble-Drome" lettering on tank 1959-'69
Hex style prop driver- 1985

There is a variation in red from batch to batch. Red will also fade so some of the pinkish tanks in the pic may be from fading. Some of the sales distribution engines were anodized other colors but were for show only. There is a pic of an olive drab pee wee in the Cox engine handbook.

Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Jason...did you know Wisconsin has a bag limit on Pee Wees?
Heat will fade color fairly fast, several lean runs can really fade the anodizing.
Jason, can you pleased post a nice close up of one of your later Pee Wees with single vent, non-taper case, next to an early one? I'd like to make a Pee Wee info chart.

Bag limit? Crap.... I won't show a pic of my silver ones then or the NIB ones either just to be safe.
I'll get a pic up soon.

Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Out of all Pee Wee's I own and have seen, now including Jason's collection, this particular engine stands out like a sore thumb. I've never seen a violet color Pee Wee and it has me scratching my head. No fading, the violent is a like new deep color. If this was a color variation, I wonder how many exist from that batch?
Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Mark,
Here is the early to late backplate pics. I also have the early, mid, and later backplates next to each other.
Let me know if you need more angles.

Side or 3/4 view would be great thanks...as far as the DNR or Game warden is concerned...i've never heard of you.

Sorry to say, its not rare, but again it's not real common. I've seen the darker, almost dark cherry version often, to the point there's no collector demand for it.
Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Thanks for the feedback Mark! I'm sure my daughter will appreciate that engine even more knowing it's not real common, if not, maybe she'll give it back to me.
Re: How many kind of Pee Wee cylinders were produced?
Whatever the colour, you have to admit this is one adorable engine!
