R U saying the "Goose" was a successful aircraft? (I've been to see it in Oregon)
It only flew on one day in SanDiego, CA in 1948 and only for a very short distance. Further the plane, was built to attract a government military contract. US government rejected the "Goose" because it's sheer size made it impractical for miltary operations requiring a docking facility to off-load military cargo like tanks and arcraft.
Further the wooden structure would never have held up in military useage.
Howard Hughes was, above all, an excentric.
That I know but it did fly!
There is more to aviation than military interest I was told several times by people who thought they knew everything about aircraft that nothing "big" could fly at all if it was made from wood.
Re: Spruce Goose (8 x .010s!)
nitro/Indra:
In the case of the Goose it WAS built for military intentions as a transport for troops, aircrat, tanks, artillery etc. to distant areas in conflict.
Further it was not built entirely of wood the airframe being various metals like aluminum. The principle use of wood is the exterior covering and most of that is plywood.
"Spruce Goose" is a misnomer because very little of it is made of spruce. "Spruce Goose" rymes in tricky nickname and thats about all.
BTW, I have been to see the actual "Goose" now located in Oregon. Have you ever seen the "Goose"?

Put the "Goose" on your "must see" agenda. the "Goose" is only one of the featured aircraft at The Evergreen Flight Museum.

I would love to see it one day.
Something to add to yours if you have not seen it already is the "Avro Lancaster" in my opinion a fantastic plane. There are not many left and the only original one flying is in Canada.Or if you get over to England there is one at the RAF museum in Hendon.

Re: Spruce Goose (8 x .010s!)
I first got to watch the Goose sit and rot for a bit out at Evergreen for a few years before they got the money together to build the museum. 3 separate very long parking tents, one for each wing and one for the fuselage. Then I watched them construct the museum that it is now hangar'd it. Now they have a space museum next to the Goose museum.
Mom and Pops went down and seen the Goose at Long Beach,CA when it was in that big dome.
Very nice little RC flying field on the same property behind both museums, and at one point they had a CL circle and quite a few guys flew CL there. But the circle was dozed over to make room for the space museum or parking.
It's an engineering marvel, well worth the trip for the visit,,and bring a RC plane. So long as you have AMA and ask nicely they will let you fly. There is or was a donation box for the RC field.
The Realfight simulator has the old Evergreen Aviation RC field to fly on, when they flew on a old abandoned runway section.

One question if I have a BMFA membership but not an AMA becuase I am not a US citizen does that mean I cannot fly?

You'll have to check into the by-laws. (read the unreadable fine print)
There are folks that fly overseas that come to the US shows and fly all the time. Just have to do some research.

You need an AMA card to fly at AMA sanctioned flying sites/events.
It also is insurance if your model damages something/somebody.
Re: Spruce Goose (8 x .010s!)
ya, the ama is a very good idea, i dont fly anywhere if i cant find my ama card
