Eric, you beat me to it with this post. I would have thought there'd be more action by now.. especially where there's more freedom in design. One could literally fly an engine with a two-wheel undercarriage.. if it was controllable!
Maybe it's just a matter of bumping this thread every few days.. to keep it fresh??
Maybe those who are still considering.. should look at a prospective-build as a "rat-rod" type of thing? A "flying freak" if you will. Weight isn't much of a concern.. so you have the freedom to use many types of materials. The model only needs to achieve a regulation-flight "once". It can be built with "that" in mind. Less attachment.. and more fun! You might even decide to build a couple different ones..
Let your imagination run wild!!
Re: Cox Engine Forum Speed Contest 2018!!!
I will start on mine after the first of the year
still not decided on a design yet, but will probably re-purpose any of 5 unfinished 1/2a planes cluttering up my shelves
Since I volunteered to provide prizes I will not be competing ---but doing this just for fun

Speed Panes
I've got 3 planes going on the work bench now, one is nearly finished! I"ve taken a lot of liberty with some plans from the Outerzone and they have been a lot of Funn!
I plan on using a Tee Dee, Black Widow, Golden Bee for power! I'll try to post some pictures when they are done.

The Traveling Engine 1 is back on the road if an .049 TD is needed for a speed run.

That's good to know Jason. The Tee Dee .049 engine will haul-A$$.. in a small speed-model.. We need to have more CEF members step-up... and commit to entering an airplane in the 2018 contest. If you have a Cox .049 engine.. "get it running".. don't be bashful.. build a simple small control-line airplane.. and enter it in the contest! It's all about having fun.. and carrying-on the tradition of running our Cox model-engines.
Where are we at with this?
title sez it all

JPvelo wrote:So awhile back we had a Profile Scale speed contest. It was fun but it became bogged down with rules and procedures.
I'm proposing a new contest.
Build a control line plane out of wood, no metal or composite speed pans, power it with a cox .049/.051 engine that uses a cox glow plug and a suction feed fuel system. Landing gear made of wire with a minimum of 2 wheels at least 2" apart. Commercially available prop from a major manufacturer, no boutique carbon fiber or fiberglass racing props. Exposed bellcrank and pushrod. 35% nitro maximum, no "funny fuel". "Spider wire" type lines at least 35' from grip of the handle to model centerline. Flight timed for 12 laps (1/2mile) at the start of the third lap after launch. Model flown level with or below pilots shoulder height.
Two classes, reed valve and Tee Dee/Medallion.
Flight videos posted by June 1st 2018.
Any takers?
I think these were the rules. Basically make a balsa plane with two wheels and fly it!

35/35...
Thanks Rene!! Well.. there you have it. There's 30 days from today; to get a regulation flight/video posted. Most of you who are reading this.. likely have a model and engine that could be "readied" and flown within that amount of time.
35/35 = feet of line-length/max-nitro in the fuel..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE9re9BqSIo
480 mph qualifying-run. Your 1/20th scale model (16-18" wingspan) only needs to fly 24 mph to duplicate the scale-speed.
make it happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How am I supposed to make the links work? I get nothing. Google probably needs me to sacrifice my youngest child first or something.

Re: Cox Engine Forum Speed Contest 2018!!!
Riding a tandem either goes great or you ride the thing straight to divorce court. It’s a microcosm of the relationship. It’s about communication and respect, the captain communicates what’s going on and then respects what he’s hearing back from the stoker. My wife and I do really well on a tandem.
But enough about bikes. I epoxied the horizontal stab earlier today and plan on building a tank this weekend.

Not to sure about your first born, I thought the second son was the problematic one.
Second son's no problem at all. Lives about 1,000 miles away and never bothers to call us. Making his own way whether we agree with his lifestyle or not. What we don't see doesn't hurt us. At least we know he's working and supporting himself.
Now, no.1 son, that's a different story. 23, living at home, no job, no money, no license. Filed a statement with local police yesterday after discovering $2,000 cash was missing from my office. Guess what they found out? You can put up with some bad behavior from your kids, but man it hurts when they lie to you and steal from you, and then blame you for all the crap in their life.
Maybe the Google sacrifice option's looking ok
I jest. You don't stop loving them, but they can drive you nuts.

Life is funny
Focused a lot on my health
New construction on the micro ranch
Gun smiting
Re-loading a bit
License to carry classes and practice
Shooting stuff
Building stuff...for the house
New shop build
and this adds endless clutter to spaces...like my airplane shop as we shuffle crap all around
Bottom line is for 2018 I doubt I spent one day this year dorking about with my engines and models
BUT I am committed to this event and as posted back on first page:
Please dear group....no matter the rules... support this event,
I am officially NOW a sponsor with:
1-- $100 US(or foreign country equivalent) Cash prize to First place (evidenced by CEF popular vote)
1-- Brodak or RSM kit of choice from the 1/2 a list of kits for Second place (evidenced by CEF popular vote)((basically allocated $75)
1-- Sig MFG or Tower single quart fuel cost for any blend desired for Third place (evidenced by CEF popular vote)(( basically allocated $30))
I eliminate myself from any prizes
I nominate Rusty/Kim/Ron Cribbs to be arbitrators of any and all disputes
15' tall x 15' wide x 44' long RV cover being converted to new shop
