Cox Engine of The Month
finally got to go flying

finally got to go flying
Quite some time ago I built this little Sabre. I have been waiting for a test flight. I cant fly anymore so I had to wait for one of my sons. He hasnt flown in several years and he was very impressed with how easy it was to handle and also how responsive it was. We were starting to get a little wind and were fighting battery problems. She cut through wind pretty good one the first and only flight and my son was just trying to settle in after many years away from the handle. We could not get a second start out of our batterys and the wind was getting to strong so home we went. I was so happy just to see it fly once and to get out of the house for a wile.
The engine is testors mccoy, and fuel was 10%-26%, prop was 6x3 cox turning about 14500 rpm.

Congrats a greenie for your efforts, hah on the battery problems
you are not alone however I have not had a battery issue any many years as once tortured
by it's ability to stop a lovely day out flying in your tracks a method is found to never suffer
that fate again.
Next time out get some vid even off a cell phone will do, you will appreciate having it for later

Phil. Have you seen this clip? Taken at a local Aussie club & the models look pretty similar.

Rod, that video is what got me hooked on the project. If you click on the show more button there are links to the plan.

Re: finally got to go flying
Thankyou!!! I just did some testing and found the problem was the plug. Even though we got one good rock steady run, it seemed to act funny when starting like the batterys were shot. The plug heats up and smokes and smells, but wont glow. I tried another head and it glows fine. We had extra batterys with us but they didnt help. I thought they were bad because of age. Its probably a good thing cause the wind was picking up fast.1/2A Nut wrote:Congrats a greenie for your efforts, hah on the battery problems

Rod, the plan, and both planes are 75%. So when you print it out, it comes out this size, at full size. No scaling down needed. Clear as mud huh.Oldenginerod wrote:So is yours full size or 75% like the one in the video?

Phil.
It sounds to me like the coil in the head may be contaminated. If it heats then there must be current flow. Any break in the circuit would mean no action at all. Any short in the coil would mean that the resistance is reduced and current would increase, causing it to heat even more. Good luck finding a head. (I'm not parting with any of mine ) They're out there, but not common. MECOA have a head adaptor for using a standard plug in these engines.

Dick Sarpolus
Congrats Phil!! That looks like a nice flying little model. The vid posted by Rod mentions it being designed by Dick Sarpolus. I have a plan for his "Zlin Akrobat".. a 1/2A version of Sig's model which came from his book; Building and Flying Control Line Model Aircraft. It's one I'd personally like to build someday. It's a 29.5" span profile/sheet-wing design for Tee Dee .049/.051 power.. or similar.
