Black Widow "touch up"? Empty Black Widow "touch up"?

All five of my BW's are good runners but have scuffed fuel tanks. In the cold and dreary months of winter I'll like to improve their cosmetic appearance. Their crakcases are fine as is.

Has anyone done this successfully? And what did you use for black enamel?

I was thinking Krylon semi-gloss black enamel.

Comments please?

The B/W many times have scratched tanks. I guess something will cover them and be fuel proof. I use masking tape around shank of my small drivers. There are allen screws small for 1/2A and use ball driver. This stops marking case when installing engine. I have two Venom clones and a Black Widow that need nice bowl.

Thanks, Dan.

These engines were in use while Cox was still in production and I may have damaged some of the myself when screwdrivers slipped. It was no big deal then. Modern hex-head socket fasteners are an an excellent preventative.

Regardless the scuffs are there and I'm looking to remove them and am looking for suggestions.

If your not gonna run them a sharpie works fine.

I use allen head socket screws too, and wonder how I managed prior. I can swap a engnie in 1/5 the time and not worry about damaging any anodizing.

I am starting to replace all the screws in my box with Allans. What an improvement!

I'll confess to having a nice BW on a display stand on our fireplace mantle and it does draw a fair share of positive comment from visitors to our home.

While a "Sharpie" may conceal the scuffs I'd like to do a more permanent repair that would withstand the rigors of actual use.

UPDATE: Just did a "Sharpie" touch-up on my BW. Looks at a lot better but still...............

SD,

I guess anything that is fuel proof would work fine. I am not sure if Krylon is or not. Your best bet would probably one of those little auto paint touch up cannisters sold at the auto parts stores such as autozone, o'reillys etc. They come with a small brush and a pen tip for detail work.

For better quality paint get some touch up paint at your auto dealership.

Gun bluing, which is black oxide doesn’t really chemical react with aluminum only steel.

If you were to paint it i'd lean toward hi-temp engine paint, as it might be more resistant to fuel and hot oil.

If it really bugs you, it's probably best to just replace it.

I did a sharpie job in my BW. Comes right off if you rub it with your thumb.

Yikes! Now that I've done a temporary "Sharpie" touch-up on my BW's, other items are SCREAMING for attention. Slightly bent head cooling fins now stand out as never before calling to be replaced from my stash of OEM NIP glo-heads.

Wait a minute!!!! Have I become possessed by some sort of fixation on detail?? ARRRRGH!

lol! (My signture says it all!!!!!!)

It's kind of fun isn't it? I enjoy listening to some music and playing with the engines. Its amazing what a little attention to detail (solvent, stiff tooth brush, Dremel buffing wheel, Brasso, 1000 grit sand paper, heat gun, gun bluing, etc., etc.) can result in a really nice engine collection. I'm currently restoring/cleaning/replacing wrong parts, a couple Space Bug Jrs., a early Golden Bee and a Black Widow.
