My new and old best friends - P-38 & T-28
Done, flight worthy and ready for prime time.
Shimmed the engine just like the original builder did. I figure it flew fine (no crash damage) and fuel residue stain patterns on the wings shows flight time.
I will have to replace the 1 1/4" nose wheel with a 1 1/12" as the Enya recommended 9/7 prop just touches the ground. Otherwise we are good to go on 52' lines.

Wow. That looks great. You did it again. I still enjoy watching your restorations along their merry ways.

Re: My new and old best friends - P-38 & T-28
Thanks guys.
This was one of my more enjoyable builds. The basic structure was sound, I just had to add three pieces of balsa. 1X3" section to replace the missing cowl piece and two reinforcements to the wing landing gear.
Vertical stab just glued back in place, but the broken elevator was a hassle.
Simple Green and fine steel wool lightly applied cleaned off the dirt leaving most of the patina. I just wanted to keep it as original as possible and honor the builders efforts. I was probably a teen ager when he put it together. That Enya .29 is from the early 50's.
BTW - The Irish singer Enya is 58 years old today. Heard it on the BBC this morning.

Great job showing how meticulous you are with building - restoring all parts of modeling. Great inspiration.

Thanks Doc, But I'm just a hack at this compared to you and others here. I measure with a stick and cut with an axe, close enough is good enough for me.
Eric, the .29 that came with it is the best sand cast .29 that I have outside of my new one. It has no damage to the head or cylinder fins and the intake venturi has no chips and I would like to keep it that way. If I have the glow plug threads fixed and have it anodized I may re-install it after a flight or two.

Neat Bob,
I like the restoration there. Very nicely done. I would not have been able to resist a full repaint!
The engine may have a recommended 9x7 but for a CL Scale model that small perhaps an 8x6 running the Enya in a fat but smooth 4 stroke on 52 foot lines will probably keep the model under control and below a B Speed lap time!

Thanks, When it sees air time my son will be at the handle, I'm positive I would get dizzy after a couple of laps and plant it.
Fought with myself not to paint the whole thing, but I wanted to keep it as original as possible. I had to paint the orange trims, had no choice.

Superb restoration. Only one suggestion-- a three blade prop.

I don't know how the older Enya .29s ran in 4 stroke mode, but the Model 5224 C/L .29 was impossible to operate in 4 stroke mode no matter which head or air intake insert was used, no matter what per cent nitro, no matter what prop. They were good for combat on pressure, speed/rat race trainers, sport, scale and free flight.

Thanks Victor and Chris
You reminded me that I have a Windsor Master Air-screw 3 blade in 8/6 that is a good fit, however they do offer a 7/4 that would allow more ground clearance. The 8/6 will be cutting off grass ROG. This is partly because the original builder built in a lot of down in the engines position. No matter, we will probably take off from asphalt anyway.
Now to find a proper prop nut.
