Enya of the Month (45 TV Model 600I)
Enya of the Month (45 TV Model 600I)
Just finished up reconditioning this:
Enya 45 TV Model 600I plain bronze bearing engine.
Saw the same engine on *bay and that seller wire brushed the entire engine.
Selling for $140.00
That's like removing the finish off a Chippendale furniture --- reducing its value (immensely).
This engine was made in 1964 with the finned head for 1 year.
The previous version (for one year -- nick named baldy) didn't have the finned head but a solid head from bar stock (no fins).
(before the ball bearing version came out the following year for MRC = Model Rectifier Corporation)
the engine was reviewed in:
“Engine Review”
M.A.N. March 1965
The engine's “extremely high torque, which reached 75oz. in. at between six and seven thousand RPM.”
Excellent power to weight ratio would be even better, but twin needle carburetor accounts for nearly 1/5 of
engines total weight, or almost 2oz.
“The throttle works extremely well” although both needle valves “look dangerously near the propeller.”
Despite finding “a fair level of vibration” when running & “liable to kick-back sharply” if flooded.
The 45 as being “a very good general-purpose radio control engine.”
“It is an extremely well made & finished engine, with a lot of attention given to obtaining “optimum” fits and running
clearances”, but “by no means outstanding in power output.”
Enya spec. at 0.55 BHP @12,400 RPM.
The spinner was included from Enya as a purchased option to match the engine.
Also inside the box is extra items to change the engine to a U-control engine with 2 different venturi inserts (sport/speed?)

I have 2 of these one new in plastic case. I can attest to the torque of these engines, great for control line. I bought both engines after I saw a friend of mine fly his very hefty Veco Thunderbird with one in the nose. He never broke out of a 4 cycle the entire flight. Here is a video of him flying so you can see/hear what I mean.
What do you plan on doing with it now that it’s ready to go?

I don't know?
I never had an engine this big.
Largest displacement I have is a Fox 36x stunt and it's on a Magician.

It will work in a lot of CL airframes. T-bird for one, since it’s currently set up for RC you have tons of options.
That 36X is a combat engine not a stunt, unless someone modified the timing. That Magician will move out quickly!

The 36X has enough pull that stunts are easy (and fast) to do.

HEY! I like Idea of the “Enya of the Month” thread! Bob (rsv) was great at show and tell of the Engines he acquired, cleaned and refurbished. You have done the same with this one. I have even bought a couple to play with cause Bob was having so much fun with his! Here is one I should be getting in the mail any day now:
Did that say $10?? My wallet creaked open and it’s on its way to me.

Oh, I know. It’s very powerful and yes it will pull a stunt plane easily. I was just saying it wasn’t designed as a stunt engine. It was a combat engine from the get go and doesn’t carry the “stunt” moniker like the Fox .35 Stunt.

That's a good find for $10.00?
Let's see?
New gaskets from Bob Brooks. (check)
Four metric screws from hardware store -- maybe 3mm by 6mm in length. (check)
( I have a McMaster-Carr store and can get any type of fastener there - better than a local hardware store)
Especially when I reconditioning the Super Tiger 20 last month
-- Head bolts were #5-40 x 7/16" and the backplate bolts were #3-56 x 5/16"
Another gem --- Super Tiger 20 (before / after)
Now:
A little heat to loosen up the caster oil on the stuck parts.
Now everything apart, time to run them into the sonic tank for a cleaning in a heated (135°) solution for 30 minutes.
Blow the parts off and reassemble engine.
(and repeat -- for the next engine)

Re: Enya of the Month (45 TV Model 600I)
I've used the Enya .45 for stunt many times. My last plane which used it was called the Avenger, it was a large foam sheeted wing profile. The Enya did pretty well. It does tend to get hot with the stock muffler that was provided. I drilled out the stinger which helped a lot. The Enya .45 you show here is a very early version. No web casting within the exhaust and I believe the cases back then used more magnesium in them as they tend to oxidize to what appears to be white effervescence. I have many many Enya engines. We refer to them as Enemas. One thing to recognize about the older cased Enya's is that they're as fragile as eggshells. Even the newer 5224 in the shinier case is weak. I've tweaked the cases in two of them as they don't take a ground strike very well. I'm talkin grass strikes. My Enya .45 is the newer version (Same designation) and is generally a 1-2 flip starter. My favorite Enya is my Enya .60 MKIII which just growls nicely. It seems as the larger the engine gets, the easier they work and start. Very user friendly.

My Enya .60 MkIII scares me. It's a beast
I worry about it pulling away from the test stand.
