Is this a 1958 Space Hopper .049?
Hi lads,
I won this Space Hopper .049 on ebay last year.
has anybody had experience with this type of engine?
Is there anything I need to know before I test start it?
Cheers!

Mr G
You can. Mark will be able to give you a much more closer date. I can't tell from your picture as you would have to look at the details. The Space Hopper was made from 1959 to 1961, so sometime between those dates.

OK thanks!..so that would count 1958 out?

Mr G
Maybe not. Possibly made late '58 and sold early '59?

Re: Is this a 1958 Space Hopper .049?
It could be the wrong cylinder... it does look to be a pre-1955 cylinder and head although that could be just the distortion from the scanner. Well, the head does appear to have the top fin under the center post but still not 100% sure. Is there any way you can get a better picture? When did you buy the engine? If it was from around the end of last year, the auction may still be available to see, check your eBay account for your purchases and see.

Looks like my Space Hopper G.
I'll drag it out and have a proper compare later.
J
P.S.
I can't be too accurate but I think it was made around
14.57 poss 14.59.07 on the 01/04/59

Re: Is this a 1958 Space Hopper .049?
Hi G
Some of the guys on here have a much better eye for detail than me but I think the head is different and poss
the cylinder maybe. It's difficult to see yours that well and what I think I'm seeing may be dirt or oil.
I did try to get a reference library section set up on the forum but there wasn't much interest.
It seems the general view is bods would rather have these pointless 'debates' about what may or
may not have left Cox and in what spec.
J
PS
Although your engine was only made for 3 years it was during a period of great change product wise at Cox where
they may have stuck diferent bits on them.
PPS
Yours is a Space Hopper

Hi,
I googled the space hopper picture and I compared it with mine. They were identicle.
The blurred picture is distorted and the bottom of the clyinder looks silver or white. Well
it`s black like the google picture. When you scan an object that`s not flat you get a
distorted image, in this case more elongated with false colors at various points. If you`re
still not satisfied I will borrow a digital camera from someone and take another shot of it?
Unfortunely I don`t own a digital camera or a cell phone with a usb conection.
Kindest regards
Mr G

Thanks mud and dankar for your good feedback.
Yes, I will run it. I have never seen such a perfect piece of engineering by cox.
Can`t wait to hear what is sounds like?
P.S. Do you guy`s know what model airplanes or cars this space hopper was first used for?
Can`t find much info on its early use.
