IDing a Cox unknown: help please?
I have Cox .049 of unknown ID or vintage. I originally used it in the mid-60's to power a "Miss Thriftway" hydroplane. Today it's just one in my collection of nineteen
The engine appears to be nothing more than ordinary Cox with no distinguishing features that I recognize. I'm very knowledgeable about Black Widow's, Golden Bee's, Sure-Starts, TD's etc. but this one has me baffled.
It has an extruded crankcase, attached fuel tank and reed valve. There are zero exterior markings. It may, in fact be nothing more than a "production engine" produced in mass quantities. (I don't even remember where I obtained it)
The engine is complete and after it had been cleaned and "refreshed" with new gaskets and seals the engine is in excellent running condition.
If there are any Cox sleuths out there will you please help me identify this engine?
Thanking you in advance for any input.

Picture? Probably not, but could it be just pieced together from parts?

Unlikely because I have had it for over fifty years and I know it's not been touched other than by my own hand. Cox parts weren't a big issue over fifty years ago. They were then considered the ultimate in disposible engines during the days of "crash and trash" thinking.

I don't know much about the cox "Miss Thriftway" so I would need to know what year you know/think it was made.
I would always check here first. http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_frameset.htm Other then a few others out there who don't want to share their massive collection, this is the largest Cox products collection on the internet.

Dave,
If you can get a photo posted I'm sure I can help you ID it.

It wasn't a Cox "Miss Thirftway" but from an other manufacturer whose name I don't recall. Over fifty years is a stretch for the most agile of minds if not mine at 74.

I was going to say, I have never heard of the Cox Miss Thriftway but I have heard of the Miss Thriftway in general. Could it be a early engine such as a Space Bug Jr., Space Bug, Thermal Hopper... Is the tank blue with ribbing? Is it a "clunker" tank like on the Dragonfly and RC Bee? Could it be a Aurora tank from a Aurora .049? (I guess the Aurora .049 had the same tank assembling holes as a Cox bee .049).
Aurora .049

Could it maybe be a strato bug?
Are you 100% sure its cox but almost impossible to tell if we have no pictures.

Yes I am 100% sure that it's an orginal Cox .049; all the parts that I replaced were were standard issue from Bernie. Again, it has an extruded crankcase not a die-cast.
The tank is natural aluminum with no ribbing.
BTW, I had forgotten about this Cox and the "Miss Thriftway" until our son found it and gave it back to me. The "Thriftway" is saturated with castor oil and beyond practical repair. Should I ever be so motivated enough remains that I could easily make patterns from it and build a copy. The remnants, complete with running hardware (flywheel, universal, drive shaft, strut and metal prop) are in a paper grocery bag under my build. table. I'm waiting for it to "call" for my attention.

Re: IDing a Cox unknown: help please?
Well I cant wait for the photos! Im getting a image in my head of a cox engine with a (non stunt) 8cc tank. I have a few of these and dont recall them ever being sold on a seperate engine other then to be replaced as a product engine. I dont know, i'll just have to wait and see.

Oh, the INTERGUE I have generated with my mystery Cox and Tornado 6X3 prop stash!
(The forum awaits hushed in eager anticipation as the suspense builds)
BTW, my helpful neighbor and "enlistee" is a "night owl" whereas I am a "morning lark". When he arises I'll have the photos taken sent here. It's currently 9:15 AM (PST)
