The coop is warm

The coop is warm
Thanks to Rusty I remembered I had a brooder lamp. 200ft of cord later and the coop has heat.
Ungrateful birds pecked the crap out of me while I was freezing my butt off hooking up the lamp, but hey I did the right thing.

Re: The coop is warm
A couple years ago my neighbor's coop went up in flames from the brooding light on extension cords. Nothing survived even though I called the fire dept and they were on scene in less than 20 minutes. I was stacking firewood and the coop went like a train whistle then BOOM!
At least the damage was ONLY the coop due to the quick response from the fire dept.
Make sure the wire heavy enough so nothing can overheat. Those heating bulbs can also light dry straw on fire. It may be worth the effort to pull a dedicated circuit out to the coop for needs like this, or install a relatively small amperage breaker panel so you can have other uses if needed.
I hope all goes well.

Re: The coop is warm
Lol, hopefully no baked chicken in the AM. I used heavy duty extension cord, it should pop the breaker before bursting into flames. The lamp also has a heat cage on it so should it become dislodged it won't be able to set anything on fire. The coop is designed in such a way that I don't have to use straw bedding.
I do intend to run a dedicated circuit as the pool pump is very close to the coop. It runs on 240V, bit I should be able to tap off of a leg. Winter came quick for me so up till today heat wasn't a concern.

As an observation I'd offer, extention cords are often purchased on the basis of price and length rather gauge.
Fires are often the result.

Reading threads like this make it much easier to put up with the 110 degree summers here.
'Winterizing' the chicken coop just means stapling old feed bags over the screen door. They seldom blow up.

I don't believe "gratitude" is within the pyche of birds; their instincts are primal in nature as any one who has observed chicks in a brooder can attest.

Re: The coop is warm
Most chickens I have kept are pretty mild mannered however, there is always one ornery one in the bunch.
In this case it is a Bantam blue cochin. My youngest daughter wouldn't leave him alone when he was a chick. I think he was over handled and now he is hand shy. The fact he is a rooster doesn't help things.
I agree though chickens are very rough on one another due to their inherent nature.

Didn't Charles Darwin write something about "survival of the fittest"? Seems I 'member something about that.
It applies to humans also, BTW.
