Engine Restoration
I have seen threads in here of cleaning and restoring engines...Is glass beading a No-No on aluminum tanks and crankcases? Guys are using #2 steel Wool & oil,Various Cleaning products, toothbrushes and water paper to bring back the shine....Why not a nice light glass beading on the metal? Internal parts, I can see why this procedure would not be used..but externally...glass blast is really smooth...Any thoughts on this??

I have had OS engines glass beaded to bring back the like new factory finish. Not sure how glass beading would look on the tanks or crankcases. Never known glass bead to be smooth like the factory finish cox had. I believe the parts were tumbled in a media from what I have read on the net.

Glass beading will look alright on a cast crankcase, but I have not had good results when doing this on Cox engines. As Jason mentions, you do not get a 'natural' looking finish.

I don't think the extrude cases and the 'reedie' tanks were tumbled as you can clearly see the machining marks, however I think the earlier cast cases were tumbled, at least it's documented that Cubs were and I think likely that the other manufactures (Atwood, K&B, Wen-Mac, etc. as well.
