Thinking Cut on the line or what?

Post  getback Wed Jun 18, 2014 12:05 pm

I was wondering what it is that you are doing about ..when you download airplane plans and the line you want to cut looks like a tree to your exacto blade ? can you make the lines narrower or cut on the inside / outside of the line ? witch I have noticed will throw the whole thing off one way or the other ....... Input is appreciated , Biplane  Getback

Can you take a picture? A visual might help.

Well...heh

I like most parts cut so the line is just visible when the part is on the plan. So I would say cut to the line, then sand lightly.

If the parts are cut wrong then they may not fit together. This is especially true with spars to ribs. It really helps to make dimensional parts, then fit cut parts to dimensional parts.

Hope this is some help. Very few sets of plans are dimensioned.

Ron , Prints blown up to make scale close as possible,,,,,,, Cut on the line or what? Wp_20111 Ok whitch side of the line do you cut on ? I figure as long as you cut all of them on the outside they will should /fit ... Either it will be lager or smaller but if cut the same will fit without  problems   as far as different size ribs ect , I am thinking I am causing myself problems by not being able to cut this wide line true  Crazy Eyes   Getback

If I am not mistaken that looks to be a rib that is sheeted. If that is the case you would cut on the inside as when sheeted it will be the correct size.

I could be looking at it wrong. Can someone else confirm?

Eric, do you have picture of the entire plan? I don't want to steer you wrong.

I believe that the picture is depicting sheeted wings in Getback's post. The cut would be to the inside line, with the sheeting taking up the rest...except there are probably 2 rib profiles overlapping with the other profile cut to the outside line as it will not be sheeted.

Consulting the rest of the plans is necessary. Remember dotted or dashed lines are hidden in typical convention. Grain is parallel irregular lines, and end-grain is randomly dotted...in typical convention (HAHA like everybody actually follows convention, and like there is only one "standard")

Thanks Phil. I thought I was seeing it right, but didn't want to mess him up. Seeing the rest of the plans would help. It may be a fully sheeted constant chord wing, but it may not in which case some of the ribs will be cut to the outside line as Phil mentioned.
