Help! Cox car engine pull start return spring

Post  happydad Fri Sep 25, 2015 6:51 pm

Does anyone know where to get a Cox car engine pull start return spring?

I've searched several spring manufacturers and the narrowest spring they make is 1/2 inch like a measuring tape. I think the one in the pull start engine is 1/8 inch or less.

Help! What are they gold plated?

Post  happydad Sat Sep 26, 2015 2:33 pm

Looks like the right part, but wow a lot pricey. Thanks for finding them for me. I looked for 3 hours last night. Spring, coil spring, tape measure spring, etc. I found a company that makes the material, but the minimum width is 1/4 inch.
   Thanks getback.

Help! Re: Cox car engine pull start return spring

Is yours broken at the end.. or is it missing altogether? I was thinking if you had all the pieces, you might be able to fashion a new end on the band-spring by using a small file or grinding a notch(es) with a dremel. I'm guessing that it's usually one end that breaks. Is there a slot in the housing to accept a "T"-shaped end? Another possible source for those little band-springs might be in these little retractable badge fobs. They're cheap enough to try..

Well, the spring was rusted, corroded into hundreds of small pieces so your idea of the retractable fob looks better and better.  I'll check out your link.

p.s. i ordered 2.

Help! Re: Cox car engine pull start return spring

I had a fob that I took apart. The width of the band is .159" and it's approx. 26" long.

Here's what the "hook-end" looks like.

It attaches through a slot the spool. The other end just has a bend to fit through a slot in the center post of the housing.

I expect that most of these are made the same way. Do the innards of your spring-housing look anything like this?
