This is so sad for the families...more so than for the planes. I have to wonder if anyone was recording the radio traffic at that time. If so, that would be an eye-opener.

Re: NTSB Preliminary Report Wings Over Dallas B-17 Mid-Air
Thanks, Kim, for pointing out this latest video.
Over time, the NTSB will be able to make further clarifications and fill in other missing details to give a more complete picture. I would be interested in the experience level of the air boss who made the calls, and reason for deviation from their previous standard practices. If nothing else, even if there were something slightly out of sequence, there should have been no boundaries crossed.
It was a multiple of errors to include vertical separation, which if at least one of the other rules were maintained, may have been reason to be called on the carpet for, but at least no injuries or deaths would have occurred.
The same happened some years earlier with the crash of a B-52 at Fairchild AFB resulting in the deaths of 4 senior officers including the pilot, who was to be retired. It was a failure to respect standard protocols of operation plus failure to respect manufacturer's boundaries of safe airframe operation.
My condolences to the family members and close friends of the departed aircrew, who are the ones to have suffered their loss the most.

A video from another channel on the Dallas crash. Go to 22:25 for Dan Gryder's comments/analysis on the accident.

Interesting perspective, Kim, thanks for sharing. I thought it interesting that Dan Gryder shot from the hip, according to him, CAF has a culture problem of arrogance, in not letting pilots voice their opinions. Disagree - out the door. Bringing up potential safety concerns should never be addressed this way. That lack of discussion on choreographing the show moves doesn't appear to be discussed sufficiently.
Plus, the selection of the air boss was not a sound decision. He could have been someone in training if they let someone else much more experienced take the helm, let him sit in until he demonstrates competence to handle the job.
Nonetheless, 6 died as a result of the cascade of errors made, which is deeply unfortunate. I sense this accident may have a marketed effect for future airshows. I have always enjoyed airshows. Such accidents can have a dampening effect on future airshows as a result.

I have read other pilots falting the Air Boss but wonder why at the briefing nothing was said. The briefing was a room full of the best warbird pilots there is and none said anything about an unsafe show.
