I acquired this Pee Wee recently and unfortunately the screw housings have cracks where the fuel leaks through. So my question:
Any type of glue to cover the cracks?
Some type of welding?
By the way, I would like to save this board!...thanks in advance!

Hi Maricio,

I'm afraid there is no glue that would seal AND keep the screws from pulling through the backplate. However, I seem to remember one of enterprising and inventive members made a plate with all screw holes replicated on the plate. The plate then gets placed over the backplate so longer tank screws clamp the backplate between the engine and the new plate. Of course, this makes the new screws protrude from the "new backplate." This new plate would have the outside mounting screws going through both plates into the firewall. Then it is simply a matter for JB Weld to glue and seal the new backplate to the old backplate.

I hope that makes sense. If not, I'll sketch it up later.

Thank you very much!...yes, I did the same thing that you indicate with a sheet of steel for a Cox .049, in that case the original fastening ears had broken.
I also understand that it is possible that I cannot solder or glue this one (the Cox .020) with some glue... it is a shame, it is whole, but with cracks.
Thanks again for your message!

I would grind it out a bit and use JB weld. Clean with lacquer thinner and build up a fillet around the screw boss. It will take a fair amount of time for it to fail. What's there to lose?

Thank you very much Ken, yes, I was thinking about installing JB, what is known here as Poxipol, a mixture of two components that hardens like stone and remains gray.
He also thought of jacketing each screw so that the tightening does not occur on each housing, that is, the sleeves make the effort... thoughts Huh...

So here is my idea:
1) I make 4 sleeves for screws (they prevent the plate from binding when tightening the screws).
2) clean the plate with thinner and then with alcohol.
3) I put POXIPOL - JB epoxy glue.
4) I assemble the motor so that the glue is exactly in place.
5) I wait for the glue to complete its setting process.

We'll see tomorrow if it turns out.....

Hola Mauricio!!….Your plan to save the .020 tank cap looks like a good effort…., PeeWee’s are one of my favorite engines…..One thing that will be important is that the tank seals well and does not let air enter anywhere except the fuel fill ports….On mine I use a piece of sewing thread in the groove on the tank bowl to form a gasket there…. The thread wetted with castor oil helps hold it in place during assembly …. Photo below…

For gaskets under the screw heads I use a thread formed from the fibers of a cotton ball…. Just pull some out and twist it into a thread…. Also wetted with castor oil…. The excess is cut off after assembly….

Since the thread gasket in the tank bowl added a little more thickness I use a piece of silicone fuel tube instead of the factory O ring for the venturi seal…. The fuel tube is cut slightly thicker than the factory O ring ….

Since you tank cap has been cracked your sleeves should help take some of the pressure off of the cap when the screws are tightened…..Maybe some additional gaskets would help seal…. Let us know how your project goes!!

Roberto!...thanks for the advice! So....
1) remove the back cover and place cotton threads moistened with castor oil.
2) Assemble the motor and remove the excess cotton.
3) add fuel and...ohhhh the fuel leak continues...a small amount but the leak continues.
4) I decided to start the engine and it worked very well, a few needle adjustments and everything was going very well, so I played with it for about three tanks of fuel.
5) suddenly the engine stops and then I decide to look inside the fuel tank.
6) I found that the fuel completely degraded the glue in a matter of minutes.

Conclusion, the glue does not adapt to the needs Huh... Huh...

I keep thinking then what options I have later....

Roberto and friends....I'm thinking of a glue that results from the mixture of:
Cyanoacrylate + Sodium bicarbonate
I know it hardens like stone, I wonder if it resists solvents like the fuel we use. I could even repair the ears on the Babe Bee + Pee Wee engine mounts, I'm just thinking.
Have you done tests?

Mauricio, I don’t know if you would want to consider longer screws and washers?…. Silicone ¬†could be be used under the washers to seal…. You could again apply good pressure for the tank to seal…The only problem is that the firewall for any airplane would need recess for the screw heads…

Something else to try..  using thin rubber cut or punched into small circles with pin-hole in center.

I used a "kitchen glove" for this. I've also made venturi gaskets from the material. A paper-punch was used to make the circles from the rubber.

Regarding the cracks inside; you might try using CYA (Super Glue-thin) and sodium bicarbonate (baking-soda). Remove old glue for clean surface, sprinkle baking-soda around the cracked areas.. then apply the super glue over the baking-soda making a "fillet". Repeat as many times as needed to build-up the area around the bosses. Use the tank-screw with rubber washer to keep glue from seeping through into the screw-pocket.
