CL Advice Needed Empty CL Advice Needed

I enjoy collecting Cox engines but haven't tried any flying..................yet. After reading a number of threads about flying I'm starting to get curious. I stopped by a local hobby store and they stocked the Brodak kits and engines. Any opinions about their products? Is that a good way to get started? I have read some threads about the engines and they seem to be viewed as a decent engine, but I'd probably be more interested in running a Cox.
When I was just a wee little tyke my dad got a Cox CL kit for my older brother and I faintly remember going over to the local elementary school and watching them try to learn to fly it. But the thing I remember the most is seeing it crash and break.
Any advice for a beginner? The hobby store owner leaned more towards the electric stuff but my interest is in the engines, I'd rather hear the lively scream of a little 2-stroke than the boring silence of an electric motor.

I'm in the same boat. I fly electric exclusively, but I like cox engines. I plan on building a flying wing trainer out of coraplast, I have a link.. let me find it.

Thanks for the links Travis, I'll definately consider that. That's why I wanted to ask the experts. I didn't mean to imply that flying with electric is boring, I'm sure there are many advantages. Who knows, maybe I'll get hooked and start flying electric RC.

This is the plane that my boys and I learned to fly on. You can bash them into the ground over and over. Usually only breaking the prop. Great Starter 1/2A.

I built that plastic wing. I find it durable. I used 4mm fluted plastic, which is heavy. I used 1 1/2 x 1/16 aluminum for the mount, which is heavier than called for (but durable)

The bee engine I have on it is not the most powerful, and it flies well. I consider it heavy. It is less than aerobatic even in warm weather, and in the cold the hinge stiffens up making "outside" maneuvers difficult.

I have had to wash mud and dirt out of the wingtips, had the whole thing packed with ice and snow till it was impossible to fly due to the extra weight, and have crashed it a remarkable number of times without needing to repair it.

Using a thinner plastic, a narrower strip of aluminum, and maybe cutting 2 flutes out instead of 1 to soften the hinge, it has some serious potential for advanced flyers. The asymmetrical wing means little or no wing tip weight is needed.

I have a wooden dowel hot glued in as the spar and have had no problems. I have a clipping from a safety pin as a push rod guide. A stiffer push rod may

My biggest problem is the motor mount wiggles since the holes in the plastic are now oval. I should have punched one side of the plastic, injected hot glue, then drilled the glue for the motor mount.

I used CA to put the guide on with no difficulties.

After we lerned to fly these with a baby bee on them we put a black widow on them and they would fly the pattern. I don't think you can go wrong with this coroplast plane. And you will spend more time flying and less time building

A note to Bernie (in case you read this): I didn't realize when I started this thread that you offered plane kits on your site. I'd rather buy from you than Brodak, you're the one on here supporting us. That's just what I looked at at the hobby store.
