May 7, 1945
On May 7, 1945, Germany officially surrendered to the Allies, bringing an end to the European conflict in World War II. General Alfred Jodl, representing the German High Command, signed the unconditional surrender of both east and west forces in Reims, France, which would take effect the following day.May 7, 2013

I'm not sure I feel the excitement and thrill this event would have caused to be  felt by my parents and grand parents. I'm sure I don't want to experience the grief and pain that leads up to this type of moment. Sad  I can only hope our current leadership can learn from the past and not create the same mistakes.

That's right, the surrender in Reims concerned the Western front but Stalin wanted Russia to determin the end of the war and Keitel signed at Berlin on 8 mai. That date is still an official holliday in France. We also celebrate Jeanne D'Arc as she liberated Orléans on 8 may 1429 that ended English occupation.

Today in1945 ended the 6 years of war. It was the end of suppression, humiliation, extermination, killings and murders, only for the Germans' pleasure. It was the end of the last and 3rd war provoked by Germany in 70 years.

The 75th birthday celebrations of the German surrender were held this morning without public in Paris.

I can only hope our current leadership can learn from the past and not create the same mistakes.

As well as those of our adversaries. But they continue to stir the pot, pushing boundaries just like the leaders of Germany and Japan did. South China sea, Africa, The Crimea/Baltics. Our current administration is immersed in economics not war.

I don't remember the end of the war in Europe, but I do remember when the Pacific war ended. Big black headlines in the Manchester Union Leader. Atomic Bomb Dropped. Then a few days later - Japs Surrender. I also remember when my Uncle returned. Walked through the front door with the cutest little girl from Tennessee on one arm.

An 18 yr old in 1945 is now 94 yrs old. Something to ponder. My Grandfather passed 6 yrs ago at age 94. He joined in 1939 and was struck off strength in 1944 in France due to an artillery injury. I miss him very much. Thank a soldier next time you see one.

Sorry Bob, I didn’t mean to neglect mentioning our sailors. Maybe a better way to put it is thank a serviceman.

Too many sacrifices. So many good men have been lost and now women too. I wish things were different, but it’s not.

Idem for sailors in the merchant navy. In Belgium, sailors were exempt from military service as well as miners. But only after 7 years of service. I asked each year to postpone the military service until the 7 year limit. If for example, you quit after 5 years, you still had to do your service. Of course, in wartime, I knew I would would be called to join a vessel again.

I sailed mainly on tankers during my 10 year carreer and I was in the Persian Gulf during the 1st gulf war. We sailed only during the night and went on anchor during daytime. Around that time, another Belgian tanker was hit by 2 exocet missiles shot from Iranian fighters. I was engineer on that vessel 3 times in the years to follow.

Thank you for your service. It’s appreciated, even if you don’t feel like it is.
