Cox .020 TD drive-plate issue

Post  Cox International on Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:23 pm

We have a buyer who wrote that the hole in our TD 020 drive-plates is too big for the spline on his crank.

We have sold many of these parts and just tested ten of them on two different cranks; they fit tight.

Was there a time where Cox made TD 020 cranks with smaller splines?

Yes, the early TD .020 engines used a smaller spline. I have a TD .020 crank with the small crank spline. I have been looking for a small drive plate for a while now.

Thanks and we have a few of the Space Bug Jr. ones here that may fit.

There is interference from the bottom of the cylinder that protrudes slightly into the crankcase. It’s variability in machining from Cox. I bet if you loosen the cylinder it fits right in.

Only way to fix is to remove a few thousands from the bottom of the cylinder.

I had one out of 4 assembled that would catch a hair bit, it was a simple solution just back off the cylinder fit the backplate
on and then tighten the cylinder. I did not bother filing down anything the steel will bite the aluminum a hair and it's over.
Just remember to assemble with oil and enjoy the way the O ring snap locks the backplate into position.
