Bling, bling. Nice and shiny! The square fill tube looks nice and solid too.

Re: Aluminium backplates
Fuel filling hole is square shaped. Plain aluminum looking fine, and yellow (gold) anodized version will be good.

Re: Aluminium backplates
The mounting ears look stock. That was a weak point, as were the dimpling of the backplate when tightening the back screws. It is cheaper when machining to leave it thicker. I am guessing it is CNC milled. Not saying I would get one, but it may be good to design that in if it is not too late.

Re: Aluminium backplates
Yes CNC and the final design is still being worked on and also simplified, as every cavity and web will not be required, as aluminium is stronger than the cast zinc version.

They look great!
They also look very strong. What size it the venturi hole?

However, they will make whatever venturi hole we ask for. I would say the smallest hole that Cox made them with (Texaco) and we bore open to suit for other engines.
Re: Aluminium backplates
Those look great. I would definitely make the mounting lugs thicker. If some volume is lost for a thicker backplate where the screws secure it to the crankcase I think most would be happy with that too.

That's the goal. As Bernie has stated, the 'final' is still being tweaked, but rest assured this is being addressed as part of that.
Re: Aluminium backplates
Will these have a needle seat insert? If I'm reading the drawing correctly (a BIG if), the seat is off-center in the side view and the metal at the base of the seat is very thin -- if the seat is centered, front to back, it appears it will break through the thin base. Secondly, will you be completing the drilling of the fuel nipple in house or is the vendor supplying a finished backplate. The fuel nipple, as shown, is not drilled through.
OTOH, since this appears to be a partial print, then ignore my prattling since this may be addressed in other drawings.

Re: Aluminium backplates
Any possibility of a version without the fuel nipple for use with stunt tanks?

Re: Aluminium backplates
I don't see the need to add unnecessary weight by "beefing up" certain areas. As Bernie said, the fact that it is machined from solid aluminium rather than weak cast alloy, the mounting lugs and retaining screw seats would be far stronger than the originals. Since the aluminium will be heavier than cast, I'd suggest that adding extra material would be counter-productive.
Just my thoughts.

There is not too much meat where the venturi meets the mixing chamber, so changing that venturi diamater seems to be a challenge..

Aluminum is lighter than cast alloy like as zamac. Am I wrong?

You are correct. A quick weight of the prototype (with spraybar) is 6.31 grams versus a cast Babe Bee backplate of 11.03 grams.

Re: Aluminium backplates
As Matt is spearheading this project, one can rest assured that it will be done right.
They will be lighter, yet stronger
Changing venturi diameter will not be a problem
Yes, there will be a spraybar for the needle valve. Nothing will break – only partial drawing uploaded
Yes, there will be a stunt-tank version

hi, just checked on my collection,
on black plastic oem black widow and other same period it is very large, close to 2mm
on yours black plastic plates ( just delivered with big order here in italy) a bit smaller, 1,7/1,8mm but i could enlarge easy
on older plate (golden bee, baby bee, ) is close to 1,5mm
your future 0.082" is as black widow
that's good

Re: Aluminium backplates
Looks promising! I've been meaning to repair my Venom II which developed backplate issues after a short bit of use. Need to get it going by summer and this should be the hot ticket if it is gonna be available with the larger venture opening. Thanks for the efforts, fellas!
