My New to Me .049 - What Do I Have Here, Please?
Hi,
I just won this nice little engine on eBay for $31 (Plus Shipping and Tax for $41 total). My apologies if I outbid anyone here who really wanted it. I was looking for an .049 with a muffler for a Baby Ringmaster I plan to build. This looks like a Black Widow. Is it? And did I pay a good price? Seems to me like I did, but I wouldn't be concerned about that anyway. It's so exciting that these little engines that mean so much to us are quite affordable. The seller put lots of photos and has a 100% positive feedback, so I'm sure I got a fair deal and will be sure to leave positive feedback when my engine arrives. Thanks for any feedback!

Well, that didn’t take long
In my opinion it was a good price especially with the muffler included. Most people prefer the metal backplate that your new engine has, so that’s good. No significant oxidation, no tool marks to speak of, has been run... should be good
Edit: It looks like a Black Widow, some of them were delivered with silver colour crankcase, some had silver fuel tank instead of black. And of course due to the good parts interchangeability between all 049s, it could contain parts from several engines. That’s the beauty of these little beasts, there are engine versions for just about every purpose, and if there is not one available, you can build your own to suit your need

Nice! As Kari stated; the metal backplates/tank-bowls are what you want to look for.. and there's that muffler-spring you mentioned needing too! The engine looks like a Black Widow (.049) to me. The BW replaced the Golden Bee (GB) .049 engine and was more powerful.
The OEM muffler(s) will provide more noise-reduction than my homemade design (Jim's weblink to A Cheap Sport Muffler) although you might want to give mine a try.
Good luck with the Baby Ringmaster!

Thanks, Friends! I have the Sure Start cylinder on my Dragonfly to try as well to see if it generates more power. I know that the Black Widow wasn't made for use with a muffler, so it will be fun to do a swap and see what the tachometer has to say. Fun on the test stand.

If you do not want to remove the cylinder to check if it is a No.1 design, you may simply remove the glow head and see if it has 2 diagonally opposed transfer ports. If yes then you most likely have a genuine Black Widow or at least a home assembled Frankenstein clown of it.

Cox differences
Would be nice to know the differences, like the cylinder you just mentioned, and different number of fins, meaning...........etc.

Re: My New to Me .049 - What Do I Have Here, Please?
Number of fins on cylinder has not changed over time.. but the cylinder porting came in a wider variety. The double transfer port No.1 cylinder that was used, among others, on Black Widows was the second most powerful after the No.4 that had booster flutes in the transfer ports and was used on 49 TeeDees. Go to the left on this page and click on cylinder identification to learn everything about COX cylinders.

Re: My New to Me .049 - What Do I Have Here, Please?
The big deal with the OEM muffler (any muffler), is SPI.
When you do remove your top-end, set the cylinder back on the block/piston without the muffler and turn the piston to TDC.
Look through the exhaust port to see if you can see under the piston and into the block. All your looking for is the skirt clearing the bottom edge of the exhaust port.
I turn them up to a light and see if I can see light across the piston skirt through the exhaust port on the other side.
You don't want that with the muffler.

Nice! I could use a muffler like that! What does that black spring around it do?

It can slip around the muffler rim and open it for you to do cylinder priming. Then it's sound attenuation will be minimal though.

Thanks! I’m just learning about SPI. But I know the Dragonfly cylinder I have is Sure Start, so I can swap it out if necessary. Thanks for helping me determine how to know, 944_Jim.
