cox cylinder tooling?
Does anyone know if the original cox cylinder tooling still exists and where it is?

Re: cox cylinder tooling?
A lot of the tooling / specialized machines that Cox used in their heyday (60's and 70's) was largely worn out and they began to subcontract a lot of items to various machine shops throughout the 90's and even moreso when Estes acquired them. A lot was also scrapped when it was not replaced.
Re: cox cylinder tooling?
What a shame it was lost. Some things don't seem to make it to the scrap yard when scrapped and wonder if maybe somebody ended up taking it home "diverting" it from the scrap. As a toolmaker for 55 yrs. though I've seen many a set of "worn out" tools with some key components tuned up run another million. So will we ever see another run of cylinders?

Re: cox cylinder tooling?
I think a CNC machine could make a pretty good cylinder without needing any of the old tooling. I would think the old automatic screw machines would plunge the fins all at once which would be fast, where a CNC would just use a plunge cut multiple times. Not really that much slower. Just a program and a normal setup. Pretty close tolerances on the bore, but the taper could be fine tuned easily. I ran them since about 1980 till I retired 12 years ago. There are better machines now with live tooling. They might cut the ports and do the second operations all at once. Never played with those. I am sure someone could do them. Long runs are cheaper of course. A better/more modern design would take the same effort, like schnuerle ports muffler rc carb.....
