Cox Engine of The Month
It's raining Cox engines

It's raining Cox engines
Mail day today, 2 matched early Black Widows. ebay $36.
One Cox 0.20 Pee Wee, great shape. ebay $32.00
One vintage Cox fuel can. Veteran - from my son. Found at my daughter-in-laws grandfathers garage, second one from there. Rough. Sandblasted top and bottom. Missing cover. Replaced insert with a new one, cleaned, polished with Howards wax. Glow fuel cans, can engines be far behind.
Thirteen Cox Babe Bees from the BIN ebay auction that Jacob posted about a week or so ago, plus one NIP Surestart.
Plus Cox .020 parts from Bernie. Amazing fast from Canada. There is a 0.20 wrench in there plus the hubs and buttons needed to complete my 0.20 tether airplane.
Still waiting on .049 parts (needles, case screws, glow heads, etc.) from Matt to complete these engines. Glow heads have gone crazy, 3 for $29 from Matt, 3 for $45 from MECOA.
Trash to some, but I enjoy making these look like new again, and running them. Each one tells a story, and if you know where to look, that story unfolds.

Great Finds there Bob. The BB with the Green Rubber Spinner is a "hard to find" item. Only used on the Lime Green Shrike as far as I know.
What method of Quick cleaning do you use in Large quanity cleaning? I know you use Simple Green and Berrymans carb cleaner. Do you have a prefrence of one over the other?

I thought of you when I got those 0.20 parts because your perhaps the biggest Cox Inc, and Cox engines booster here on the forum. Pilgramages to the old Cox facilities etc.
These engines, 0.10 and 0.20 are so tiny you could mount one on a ring. You could, but that's impractical. But a glow head? Now that's a different story. Get a jeweler to build a base and mount one on a silver finger ring. Maybe it's been done. Heck, do three.
Lot's of artists over there in Hungary.

Simple Green will turn aluminum black if left over a few hours. A/F boil is best to loosen and clean. Parts cleaner works well and quickly, but will not loosen. All will lighten anodizing. The last few that I have done was using Parts cleaner, then loosen with a heat gun. With locked up engines, I prefer an A/F boil, hold while hot with a leather glove then loosen the case screws, glow head, and cylinder, then dump in diluted Simple Green and tooth brush clean. Fully disassemble, rinse in hot water, then alcohol and flood with Remoil then a compressed air blowout. Re assemble, add a drop of after-run if stored.
Alcohol - Important. Just when you think you have an engine hot water rinsed and perfectly clean, place it's parts in alcohol and shake it up a little and watch the tiny pieces of dirt appear.

Re: It's raining Cox engines
I finished cleaning all those engines that I pictured above. Curious bunch, all had been previously cleaned just showing shop/storage wear, no castor or left over fuel in the tanks but parts were missing mostly prop nuts and needles all coming from Bernie and Matt.
Sellers ebay pictures that Jacob linked me to:
Thought it would be fun if after clean-up I put the cleaned up engines back on the pictures as they were arrainged only clean.
At the same time I bought two Black Widows, new engines a best buy at $18 each.

Awesome job. A really nice touch of the before and after clean-up pictures arranged as they were in the ad.

Thanks Bob, I somehow overlooked your post addressed to me ..Not a bad idea with the rings, though I do not really carry any jewellery..

Re: It's raining Cox engines
Thanks guys. They do all sparkle now due mostly to a dunk in parts cleaner and turning the fuel tanks on my drill press with 400 grit and fine steel wool. Does wonders, just enough to resemble factory new. Jacob doesn't know it but he gave me hours of pleasure restoring them.
Love this picture. The stories it could tell. Wear shows a landing gear pattern like you would see if it were mounted on a Walt Musciano hollow log. I recognize it from long ago. Check that home made venturi screen on an early back plate.
I read each backplate and engine. You can tell their history from those images. Rookie flyer or veteran, mechanic or shop jockey. Many had tool marks, others were well kept. All appreciated by me.

Re: It's raining Cox engines
Very nice to see them all cleaned up, and now they do reside in a great home where they will be enjoyed and taken care of. I still love watching your bringing a Bee back to life posts, and always will!
