As per listing details "Uses four "D" and one 9v battery". So basically 4x "D" (flashlight battery) and one rectangular 9v battery; both types are readily available at grocery stores, etc.

Quite a neat setup and rarely show up for sale.

You don't see those everyday.

I have one that I found at a flea market some years back. Never used it, I should someday. I did open it up and inspect the circuit once. I have pictures I took of the board somewhere around here.

I had one a while back. The D cells didn't seem to be wired correctly. Three Ds were in parallel and the fourth looked like it was not. I am a two wire hookem up three wire messem up electrician. It did not work right out of the box so I chucked it. Admin, do you have photos of the battery compartment?
Why the 9 volt? It was a glow plug tester also?

I'll find what I did with it and open it up again later. That would be faster than trying to track down pictures I took of the inside years ago.

If I recall, the 9 volt battery is the power supply for a comparator op-amp, and the one D cell that is separate from the 3 in parallel is placed in series (to increase the output to 3 volts) when the "clear" button is pressed.

Instructions mentioned that:
"If light (red LED) glows, glowhead is dead"

We pressed all four prongs of glowhead clip on top fin, then light glows. How we can understand glow head is went out?

What does it mean? It seems that there is a mistake in instructions.

Yes, 3 D cells face in one direction and the fourth one in the opposite direction.

The eBay account that is selling the starter box is one of our eBay accounts. It is one that we use for auctions and / or selling non - Cox product; whereas our main eBay account is https://www.ebay.com/str/coxengines
