Spitzys and Baby Spitfires, the supermodels of model engines

Spitzys and Baby Spitfires, the supermodels of model engines
Tall and slender with a touch of class,
not pot bellies like the McCoys, and Cox,
or squart and frumpy like Testors, and OK Cubs.
Only one close are the Auroras and they are a distant second.
and the Gilberts, forget it. All business and little class.
Talking 1/2A here some of the larger engines are truly beautiful.
What got me going on Spitzy's is this ebay win of a Spitzy equipped Wen Mac Challenger. Very reasonable BIN. I have never seen one, so I turned to Mark Boesen who filled me in. Turns out one of the very first engine equipped Wen Mac airplanes.
Of course if your talking about beautiful engines...........Just lose those ugly, stupid, wire thing starters!

I love em but they're anemic. The ears on the case break just looking at them. The needle valves are so fragile they practically bend just turning them, of course that's if it's still even in the engine. Somehow, most owners feel the need to use pliers to remove the cylinder head. I just don't get it. I also find many of the prop washers to be missing. Fortunately, I have several of the Fox.07 washers that fit superbly. My buddy "Sleepy" lost his Dakota at the NATS using a Spitzy. There was hardly any fuel in it and it managed to fly away. The venturi is so small that it barely needs any fuel.

Bob, I see the first one in your pic is missing the prop washer.

Came that way. This one has one, soaking with the needle in alcohol right now.
Got a pleasent surprise when I opened the box.
Never saw one before. Other end reads Robert3. Careful with it. No Simple Green, no Berrymans. Howards wax only.
Really careful removing the needle. Pinch type keeper and stuck solid. Didn't want to bend the fragile thing or leave the tip inside. (been there)
lot's of heat and burned fingers (no cloth buffer) did the trick.

Nice, Bob, first time I have seen that early RTF, plus one that is complete including the nose spinner on the Spitzy. You have been an educational compendium on these rare birds.Bob wrote:What got me going on Spitzy's is this ebay win of a Spitzy equipped Wen Mac Challenger.

I just got lucky George, not always the case. Seller lists a variety of things not related to our interests. Probably did not know the value. $45 BIN with $7.50 shipping. Listing was hours, if not minutes old. My friendly vulture and sniper competitors on these never got a chance.
I'm as happy with the period prop as I am with the plane.
Right at home.

I thought it interesting that the magazine ad from the distributor called the plane, "the Aeromite", whereas the later edition with Wen-Mac engine called it "the Challenger".
