Re: Any stamp collectors?
Looks good, Joel. I have two postage stamps, donor engines from my Cox P-51B and Cox L-4 Grasshopper from high school 50 years ago. They are the single bypass, not the dual, probably equivalent to a Golden Bee in power. Also have them on the Goldberg nylon engine mount.
Had one on my 16" Goldberg Little Toot biplane with a Perfect wedge tank, but removed both and installed a Testors .049 Red Head with black plastic tank mount. Now, I wished I left the postage stamp on it, lighter and would be a better flyer.

Re: Any stamp collectors?
Hello Joel,
yes, definitely, there are some "stamp" collectors here on CEF, myself being one. The COX engine I had my very first encounter with almost 50 years ago in 1974, the red postage stamp backplate engine has become my favorite COX reedie ever. I think there is no need to explain its beautiful shape and shocking performance compared to its tiny dimensions.
I have quite a few of them, and I make modifications to its design in order to make it more versatile, and let alone, powerful:
1. I add the Carl Goldberg engine mount to them, or the aftermarket mount made by one of the CEF members (Jason) here
2. Especially on those with the more powerful No 1 cylinder, I replace the stock glow head with a Nelson head or Kamtechnik turbo head: result: 28k rpm unloaded speed in the air, defying the myth that reedies cannot be cranked over 20k due to the reed floating. Below is the proof that they spin a 4.5 x 3.5 APC prop with 20% nitro only, at well over 28k, with stock reed valve:

3. Most of mines came with no flats on the top fin for the COX wrench. I once took a deep breath and tried to file the flats, and I can testify it is doable, with no sweat! Now, most of my actively used red postage stamp backplate reedies have the flat on their top fin for the wrench, eliminating the risk of inflicting cylinder or fin damage by using the old wrench technique on the exhaust ports, or pliers to remove the cylinder

4. I make and add home-made exhaust throttle to those that came with the thin wall cylinder, rendering the stock throttle unusable on these cylinders due to their bottom rim. Empty or full, bear cans are my friends, and I repurpose their aluminum skin to cut and bend the throttle...works very well, if accurately made..:

Because of ther limited use without the Carl Goldberg mount, I think there are still thousands of them sitting in drawers of forgotten toys and tools around the world, laying around, having run only a few circles in a COX CL plastic plane before an unplanned landing broke the plane beyond repair, and only the engine salvaged for collectors and users of present times.

Re: Any stamp collectors?
Great information! Wow I did not know that these stamps would rev like that! The only quality 1\2a fuel I have at the local hobby shop is SIG 35% it runs good in my other Cox engines and start up is nice and quick, but I'm now thinking for this little engine maybe seeing if the Hobby shop can get SIG in some lesser % nitro..I will run it a little on the bench and see how it acts with a couple different 3-6 props..I'm going to build a nice classic style C\L plane for it, not really needing it to break any speed records..just wanted a good reliable stunter.

Galloping Ghostler, did you by chance have a video on you tube of you building the Little Toot? I watched a video on building one last night, kinda thinking about a bipe but not sure about how a slab wing will be for me in the air..

I don't, built it in the 1990's, but photos of it are on Outerzone and here too:Michpatriot wrote:Galloping Ghostler, did you by chance have a video on you tube of you building the Little Toot? Yes, love that plane George, Testors Red Head with the rotomaic really compliments the rest of the color trim. Paddle prop completes the theme.
Nicely photographed Cox postage stamp Robert.
