New Aluminum Backs Empty New Aluminum Backs

Post  Iceberg Sat Mar 18, 2023 5:54 am

Hi Gents
I bought four of the new backs made from aluminum. They look real nice but so far I have not had very good success with them has anyone else? I found the venturi gasket is tough to seal. When sealed the outer ring where the tanks tigthens against the backplate sometimes I can see a slight amount of fuel leak. Has anyone had success oversomming these issues and had great flying with these hopefully little gems?

Thanks Iceberg

I highly recommend my engine leak test. Using a large syringe, screw the needle valve all the way closed and pressurize the tank with air with a 5 oz. syringe. A small syringe doesn't work for this. Place oil or spray soapy water on the tank to tank back connection and pressurize. You will quickly see the leaks. In addition, this test will also reveal a leak on the case gasket to tank seal. In addition, this same test will also show leaks at the needle valve to backplate and or the threads of the needle valve. One other leak point which is also problematic is where the screws seat in the back of the backplate. Using the same test and nose pointing to the floor backplate up, place oil on the screw heads and note if they start bubbling when pressurized. A tank to tank back seal can be remedied by placing dental floss in the V-groove of the tank. Overlap it ever so slightly. I liberally apply oil filling the groove and then I lay the floss into it, about the 3/4 way around point is when the floss wants to come out just about at the point you feel you were good. I just keep applying oil to is soaking the floss and getting it to stick.

Hi Ken
Real pleaure to hear from you!! Been busy last year + after Covid. Flat out as a lizard drinking as the Australians say. (wife Aussie)

I will try your dental floss suggestion. Those aluminumbacks deserve to succeed they look good and really perform when fuel doesn't leak.

Ken you said three years back that you had a possibility tolocate .051 cylinder or two? Is that possible. I got several old tired .051 Tee Dees that need a liver transplant if you know what i mean. Runners but come see come saw medium RPM.

Thanks!!

I traded a lot of my Cox items for needed parts and equipment. The .051 and .09
piston cylinders are no longer.
