Those that know me, know that I try to save model engines and airplanes, not destroy them.
But there comes a time where patience and tolerance are exceeded and drastic measures have to be taken. Such a time arrived with this .020 Infant backplate. I have never been able to remove one, Spitzy's either. I have had moderate success with Wen Mac/Testors backplates but they are of a different design. Their slots are cut all the way across, not angled like the Infants and Spitzys.
Just know before I got to this point I used heat, penetrating oil, multiple tools, time and patience. Nothing worked. Just be very happy that Cox opted for a machine screw attached backplate.
Notice that the case is trash. There is a split next to the mount and the intake has been removed.
The tool marks on the head and cylinder are not mine. There is a proud spot of the top of the head that a 3/8" wrench fits on to. Why people continue to use pliers is a mystery to me.

Screw in backplates are very likely to freeze over time. Friend of mine and I worked on a full size Mercruiser stern drive that had been in salt water. Ended up grinding away the casting to remove the gears as it was impossible to unscrew the retaining ring.. Very similar to the Infant, just larger in scale.

That was a tough one Bob…. at least the recovered parts should be usable on other engines…Question: On your Infants is there a spray bar for the needle valve?…. On mine there is no spray bar….The needle valve opens to one side of the venturi directly from the fuel inlet tube….Not sure if this is normal…

Thanks Jim, and Robert I'm not quite sure what you mean. There is a normal spray bar, press fit. And just for fun I reassembled the mangled thing and it has a good compression pop. I could probably squeeze the (now) three piece mounting plate back in there too.

Thanks Bob, when I read the title of the thread, I thought you pay tribute to one of my few engine dismantling tricks (if any), but then I understood the tip of the hat is for my very limited French , restricted to recognizing the gender of French nouns!
Either way thank you for referencing me!

That is strange Robert, I have never seen another like it. Perhaps some one that has will check in.

Hey guys, it's ENFANT, not infant. For the pronunciation, see below:

Hi Bob,
PM'd you. While I wouldn't really consider myself a collector, I am trying to get at least one of each brand of 049s running, plus this infant 020. Thanks,
...Bill

Collector probably sounds better that hoarder.
I probably set out with the same aim, having one of everything, but the opportunist in me kicked in and I ended up not being able to resist a bargain, even if I already had a dozen examples.
My Torp. Jr .035 was complete apart from the drive washer (and fuel tank- not critical). As mentioned, I had a couple of folk turn me up a couple of new ones. That was back in to old ".049 Collectors" days. What I really need for the Torp is a glow plug insert. I haven't managed to source one, although the original will still run with the battery connected, and it's never going to have to fly.
If you can get an original washer from Bob, that's great. Bob, along with many others here, is very generous. Best of luck with getting it repaired and running. It's a very satisfying feeling.

Applies to me Rod.
Just today I got my 7th hand-held chain saw. I could not resist it. $19.99 SHIPPED. 26Volt battery vice 20/21V in the others. Four extra chains, a better pair of gloves, 6" bar, hard case, charger, and tools. CHINA. I don't know how they do it. Yeah, "slave labor" maybe. An ebay buy, "Dropship" (look it up) vendor in Texas. There is another in New Jersey selling basically the same tool for $17.99 but with two less chains.
Most useful tool I have ever owned. I love them. I am not careful of them, not always oiled (bar) and constantly dropping in mud etc, I have worn/destroyed one out. Mud in the commutator is deadly. Excellent for removing dead branches from trees and cutting up small logs.
I burned up many of their victims this morning.
By the way, Bill is getting more than one Infant and probably one or two others.

Wow! That's crazy for $19.99! I was happy at around $60 CAD for ours here and am very impressed with the little electric guy. I think they are actually better than mosp people would think and give them credit for. I too got it as more for a laugh and novelty, but after getting it and only using it a couple of times realized its great usefullness!

Mine has Rod's name on it....sorta.
And...and it has a headlight! The saker - hong do not. Too much. Who is going to be trimming trees at night. Appears shorter - no battery installed.
Dead one. I cleaned it up and Mark attempted a repair. 20 volts stops at a point. I still have hope. Accessories intact and provides spare batteries.
I still get a kick out of this warning label.
