Sherline lathe wont run
I hope this helps someone like it helped me. My sherline lathe would not run. I would hit the on switch and it would turn a little and stop. I searched the internet for a schematic or information and found a fix on you tube. here is the link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kusagxA_awU
But my control board was not the same as his example. It didn`t have a capacitor in the location shown. I took a good look at mine and since it was from the same company that supplys sherline I noticed mine was a different model but still had the capacitor but in a different location. I bought a 4.7 microfarad 63 volts capacitor for 2 dollars and replaced the 4.7 microfarad 50 volts in the speed control unit and my lathe is working again. I was looking for a sherline speed control on ebay and the price is $290.00 dollars. Saved $288.00 Here are some pics the board with the black circle around the 4.7 microfarad cap belong to my lathe. the one with the white circle belongs to the you tube video.

Re: Sherline lathe wont run
Juan, probably old hat to you, but yours is an earlier version motherboard with older style components with leads and point to point board soldering. YouTube version is direct surface mount.
I'd prefer yours over the direct surface mount, because it is easier to do with standard soldering tools.
Glad you solved the problem. When I make such a discovery and it works has always made me happy, just as you say, beat the system out of a few hundred dollars with your repair.
Congrats on your success story!

- Back in 1980:
- my 1971 Honda CB100 motorcycle (bought it used from a motorcycle salvage yard to meet my college budget) lost its charging circuit. The large finned selenium bridge rectifier lost a diode in it. I went to Honda, but they wanted something like $40 or $50 for the part. I did a little research at the library, with their semiconductor reference catalogs, was able to identify then bought a 25 Amp 50 PIV (Peak Inverse Voltage) silicon rectifier at a local Radio Shack store for around $5.00 .
Broke out the soldering iron, wire cut the leads off the failed rectifier and soldered the leads to the silicon bridge, mounted it to the selenium rectifier frame mount tang as a heatsink.
Took it out for a spin, solved my problem. Recently I gave the motorcycle to a good friend a touch older than me, a PHD (Professional Harley-Davidson trained) mechanic. It still had that silicon rectifier working like a charm so many years later.
Congrats on your success story!
