Baby Ringmaster Empty Baby Ringmaster

Post  Godsey3.0 Sun Jul 08, 2012 7:31 am

Hello all. I just finished scratch building a Baby Ringmaster. Covered the wing in Translucent Yellow Coverlite. Painted the fuse with Black Semi Gloss Rustoleum. I intend to put my RR 1 on this. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this plane and was willing to share some advice. It appears to have a very generous tail area. I hope it ends up as sporty as it looks.

I just set up the throws and I get about 60 degrees. It is making itself out for a combat plane. I may build another and try combat with a friend of mine.

My first try with this type of covering material. I really like it. Has a cloth like feel. Does not shrink like the plastic stuff at all.

Great work Rolla!

Do you happen to have the plans? I have been eyeing the Brodak kit just not sure which way I want to go.

Need some Decals?

I do have the plans in pdf. Would you like them? I cannot really do decals. I do not have the stuff to print them off. The CA glue fogged up some of the paint. Gonna go over it a bit. I need to add epoxy to firewall. I only used CA to attach it. I just checked and realized that my firewall is only 1/16 thick. It is supposed to be 1/8. Will it be ok?

Rolla

I am going to just add another layer onto the firewall. Do not wanna lose my engine.

I ended up putting a Babe Bee on it. I figured first flights should be taken with caution. It balances very nice with this so I imagine it will stay there. I may put my Speed Bee on it. It has a opened venturi with a SPI set on it. Also shined the crank.

What about the built up wing Biplane Ringmaster? Anyone have a pdf of the plans? I saw a jpeg on another forum once. Not good enough quality to print with any success.

Actually, it appears that what I saw was something someone did on their own. The only Baby Bipe Ringmaster I have seen is the slab version.

cribbs74: nitrosmeller has a baby ringmaster kit and i am currently making 1/8in. basswood templates of all the parts. i also have the fullsized plans and he said i could offer a copy or pic if thay will help. if you need a copy i will have to copy/upscale slightly, cut-and-paste 4 to 8 pieces of 8 1/2in x 11in. paper to make the fullsize page. i use 3M clear vinyl tape and have had excellent success for more than 30 years with this type of tape not cracking, etc. i assume you would pay postage or accept the photo and print/copy/zoom/cut/paste yourself. PM me or nitrosmeller. happydad Small Cox Logo Fireworks

Thanks deanthree5. I picked it because of the more nostalgic look. I have never tried cloth but have had this coverlite for awhile. It is a fuelproof synthetic material. I figured I would go ahead and try it. The package said to use low heat on the cloth. It just does not shrink with that. I found that very high heat in short blasts shrinks it real nice. Heat it up and then blow on it to cool it.

I think I will build another one of these and try CL combat with my father. He likes how it looks and he says my cutting almost matches the quality of a kit so he wants me to cut him out a plane. He still has to decide on what he wants.

Well, hopefully maiden tomorrow. I am going to try and make a stooge as well. I have a fairly good idea on one.

Rolla

I just really looked at your plane Dean. That thing has a very short tail. Just wing and then elevator. How much movement do you get? Also, what are the specs on the engine? Prop? Lines?

Post  Godsey3.0 Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:26 pm

I flew the Ringmaster today. First flight it could not keep tension and fell to ground. No breaks. No problem. We shortened the lines (seemed a little long to begin with). We went to fire engine up again and it was flooded. Darn venturi gasket was leaking. Finally go it started. And launched and it flew amazing. Decent tension. Very touchy. I looped and it stalled big time on the exit. It looked like a flipped fig 9. It exited way higher on the exit than the entrance. I flew another couple laps and went to loop and the engine ran out of fuel right at the top. Plane plummeted straight down and hit square on the dry, hard ground. I ran to it and found that nothing broke! Not even the old stiff Top Flite prop. Apparently it hit right on the rubber spinner. All in all it was a huge success. Gonna swap out the bee for more power. Probably my Speed Bee.

On a side note, I got the pdf plans for the Baby Ringmaster Biplane. They are very nice and good quality. If anyone wants then I can send them right over. This will be next on my build list. It will take more time though. Gotta built two wings now. I think I will got for the version with the gussets on one side to make space for external tank. I got a Killer Bee that needs a home! Very Happy
