I've been hurricaned more times than I can count on my fingers, was not scared of em till '92' when I got wiped out, literally. It takes years to come back, if not decades.
Now when one blows up I crap my pants, and it seems like they use the whole alphabet lately.

Crank:
A 'cane carries such destructive force those of us who have never experienced them can't imagine the horror or feeling so powerless when in their grasp.
We in Washington State experienced the erruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 and I personally saw it actually happen from a distance of about seventy miles. We happened.
to be out in our boat on Puget Sound at the time.
So we ALL live with some potential for natural disaster and anticipation and preparation are key to survival. The irruption of St. Helens, dramtic it was also caused catostopic flooding, death and propery damage.
I'm fond of saying: "There is no security on Earth, only opportunity". Personally I've by the "Seven Cardinal P's": Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pee-Poor Performance.

I learned the "Seven Cardinal P's" some years ago and my adherence to them is one of the reasons I have lived into my advanced years. I don't discount good luck either.

Re: Life is not a bowl of cherries
The key to being well prepared here is good insurance, flood and windstorm ( you would think I was joking if I told you what it costs).
I store 200 gal. of gasoline plus the vehicles are always full. Insurance lets you leave the area till services are restored, and you need to be armed
because the scum all show up. If you look to the Feds for help you will be disappointed.

Hark! What's this?????
In such situations calling 911 is of little avail, they have more pressing matters than stopping looters during disasters. Try saving lives.
FEMA is slow to effectively respond too. The '92 Katrina will bear witness.
