Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
Hello all,
I thought I'd add some pics to the car section. This is my unused Cox Corvette complete in the original box with all original paper work, mini catalog and white wall decals. The box is a bit worn and the plastic window has some tears, but it still has that nostalgic vibe. Cox always had the coolest box art.

Beautiful time capsule Shawn.
Just seeing the photos gave me chills.
Shrine worthy for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Any ideas of a production date? Maybe '65?

Re: Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
Thanks for the kind words. :)It really is a neat car. When I look at it, It reminds of being a kid back in the 70's and going to Western Auto or Ben Franklin 5 and dime and seeing all the Cox cars and planes on the shelf and begging my mom for one.dckrsn wrote:Beautiful time capsule Shawn.

As for the production date, I would say around '65-'66. Unfortunately, Cox didn't print any dates on the box or paperwork.
Maybe someone here could chime in on that.

A little off-topic, but in the eighth picture with the catalog: What is the handle with the push button on top and electric leads coming out of the bottom?

I'm guessing that's a slot-car controller Mark.

Re: Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
One thing I found interesting about this model is the cylinder was shimmed out with a riser to lower performance for circle running.
For straight line running, shorter runs and less overheating, they said to remove the riser for better performance.

Re: Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
That's one I didn't about know Doug. Thanks.
While we're at it, does that engine
pre-date the hd case and crank set-up?
I have a hd case/crank with the splined nose on the crank,
and was wondering where it might have come from.
The splined part of the crank is bigger (od) then the
stock Bee one. Still looking for a prop driveplate that'll fit it.

Re: Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
Bob I never broke one down that far, but I think thats an HD case, large journal crank splined on to the flywheel.
Maybe someone that took on apart knows for sure.

Yes these engines have the Heavy Duty case and splined crank with (IIRC) the large splines and you'll have to find a flywheel specifically for the cars. However, the funny cars and all worm geared cars were the exception as they used the bevel style crank as pictured below.

Re: Cox / Thimble Drome Corvette
I'm not sure what the true RPM's are, but they spin up way faster as there not is as much load as there would be with a prop which "over spin" is one of the reasons why Cox used the cylinder shim when running on a circle track. It would be interesting to try and figure out a way to tach one.Cribbs74 wrote:28,000 RPM from a Babe Bee!!!!!! Does the engine spin up faster on the ground than the air?
