They finally got me!

They finally got me!
Hacker D-bags stole my debit card info and drained my checking account in less than 24hrs.
It looks like I'll get it back, but bank won't cover the overdraft fees and bounced checks.
Be warned! I used my debit card online to order VW parts. Guess it wasn't so secure.

I haven't used debit for online purchases for at least 10 years or more for that reason. I have a low limit CC I use for online stuff and Paypal. Probably had to file a police report also since it was your bank account. Sucks the bank would not work with you on the over draft fees.

Once you get your money back you should tell the bank you'll be moving it elsewhere if they don't refund all fees. I would talk to your branch manager to get started and go above their head if necessary.

I only use my AMEX card online .... they are great in identifying fraud and taking care of customers.

Ron, I'm sorry to hear that. It feels bad to be violated, and for me the anonymity makes it worse. I had a minor incident with Amazon books a few years ago and was refunded fees and all by BofA. But since then I use credit cards, since they(Visa) are guaranteed 100% protected. I agree with Jim, I'd bet anything your local branch will fix it all if you see them in person. I have always had great treatment that way. Fees are ridiculous these days. They charge for stuff that doesn't even cost them anything. It's only computer bits, not even real money.
Good luck, buddy.

Re: They finally got me!
I only use a debit card for on-line purchases and I only ever keep a very small amount of money in that account. I just add to it when I want to purchase something. I can't say what would happen about overdraft, but I think that my bank just refuses the transaction if there's no funds there.
The bank I use is great. Lots of the big Aussie banks "rationalized" and pulled out of many country towns. One of the smaller private banks started setting up what they call "Community Banks" in these towns. Board is made up of local vonunteers and customers pledge to invest a certain amount to become "stakeholders" before the bank agrees to opening up the branch. Then, a large % of the profits that the bank makes is returned to the community as grants. They donate thousands of $ a month to local community and sporting groups. Plus it's just like dealing with a shop- friendly local staff serving at a counter- always helpful and not pushy.
I had head office ring me one day and say that $1 had been withdrawn from my account and re-deposited by a US based drawer. They suspected that this was "unusual" and froze the account and asked my permission to shut it down and open a new one. All done in the one day with no cost or inconvenience to me. That's unusually logical for a bank.

Re: They finally got me!
Ron- I'm sorry to hear that you've been scammed, hacked and robbed. I have become very paranoid of the banking system and how it works against its small customers/consumers.
I had read sometime ago that ATM cards were the "Most unsafe" method to carry or spend money, because of the lax oversite and lack of protection. I became even more scared when I started getting emails from my bank(s) asking me to sign up for the "ID theft account protection" ......it's like we're not going to protect you unless you buy this!
My employer offers "pay day pay cards" through some bank, I don't use it, I've heard to many 1st hand accounts of people who "lose" a week or more of pay after a hacker got the account number and pin. Poof - money gone- so sorry- to bad, so sad. No food, no rent, no help from the unknown, unseen bank, it's not a local brick and mortar bank, just some online/internet service with the unique ability of not letting you talk to someone who cares enough to help. ....I'm knocking on wood, I have not had it happen to me. I only use a credit card that has a $50 limit if lost or stolen, and my pay pal account is linked to an account with a very low balance, still the more "foolproof" you try to make it, they
keep coming up with better " fools". Bah Humbug!
I like Rod's use of the "community bank". Must be very similar to what we call Credit Unions over here, locally owned and operate for the benefit of the members, not the corporate CEO, or CFO type financial leeches. IMHO

Damn It Man Sorry you got got , yes go to the bank and talk to them when it happened to me they took care of the other expenses and all my money was refunded . I am with the state credit union and get a call once a month telling me there is no problems with my account . they should have some protection system set up from these crooks to keep this from happening with out having to buy into a program . Re: They finally got me!
Thanks Guys,
The money was returned and apparently the first person we spoke with had no clue as they WILL be covering all fees.
I will be modifying my spending so this won't happen again.

Re: They finally got me!
Great to hear Ron. Sometimes you just need to talk to the right person who is capable of thinking outside the square. I just had to transfer the registration of my late mother's car into my name so I can pay the registration fee and fix it up ready to sell. The first person I talked to in motor reg. said I needed certified copies of this and signed copies of that and I had to prove she was dead blah blah blah. Well they knew she was dead because they sent me (executor of will) a letter saying she was and we couldn't just pay the fee in her name. Next day, different person on the desk, rubber stamp, no I.D. all done in five minutes. Car is mine.
Back to banks, I have a customer who works in one of our major banks and he will only pay by cheque (check to most of you).
He says (off the record) that it costs too much to make internet banking secure, which they can't completely do, so they just compensate the scams rather than spend the money to fix the problems. It apparently costs them less.
Marleysky, we do have Credit Unions as well, but somehow this bank is fully a bank apart from the fact that they're very generous with their profits. Most unusual.

Re: They finally got me!
Do you know where the breach was? Your computer or the vender? In the last year I've come to realize nothing online is safe, NOTHING!
As you know the debit card is tied right to your checking acc., i don't think my bank would make me whole if I was hacked (fine print).
My credit card number has been stolen twice at point of sale in person. They made me whole again but what are they going to do, if they billed me I just wouldn't pay.
