Hyper Viper's 1st Flights Empty Hyper Viper's 1st Flights

Post  Kim Thu Feb 16, 2017 7:36 am

I've seen this discussed here and in Mark's .049 Collectors Group in past years, but had my first encounter with metal shavings inside the later releases of Cox engines.

My recent Ohio swap meet run netted a NIB Cox model (to be featured in an 'Assembly/First Flight Thread'), which I started on yesterday.  On a whim, I pulled the back plate of it's engine just to snoop around a bit, and found this sliver of aluminum hanging out in the space below the cylinder.

I was able pull the cylinder and piston from their case, and used an X-Acto knife to trim away the shaving, along with a 'shelf' of thin aluminum on it's opposite side.

I put the thing back together, and ran about half-an-hour of break-in time on it, and it's apparently gonna be a good runner.

So, even if it DOES somewhat violate my 'If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it' policy, it IS a good idea take a look inside these later engines before cranking them up.

Hyper Viper's 1st Flights Empty Re: Hyper Viper's 1st Flights

Post  GallopingGhostler Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:14 pm

Back in the mid 1980's, I purchased 2 Fuji 099S-II plain bearing cross scavenged engines (ABC no less, basically Enya 09-IV TV clones). This was from Hobby Shack in Fountain Valley, CA. They were on clearance for $10 each. Upon opening the crankcase backplates, found both had considerable aluminum machining grit. I promptly disassembled and flushed them out, reassembled them.

Prior to Estes, I never bothered to disassemble Cox engines, they ran out of the box whether in RTF or purchased separately. Since, I check all engines, no matter who they are from or where made. That taught me a strong lesson.

That passed the first class quality control at Estes Thumbs Down

You should open and inspect every Estes era engine before use. I've cleaned my share of shavings and grit out of those Sure Starts.

There was one of those Hyper Vipers in one of Kim's swap meet photos, so that would bee my guess too. Good point about the shavings too, I am going to check mine before running.

It cannot be the Hyper Viper as not only is it not NIB, the engine seen here in his pic is not a Sure Start. The engine has no choke tube and looks to have a round drive plate.

BWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

It IS a HYPER VIPER !!!!!!!!!

Once again my lack of discipline (not being able to keep my big mouth---er---keyboard shut) fails me in the face of my model airplane Ninja buds!

The guy had two Vipers, the used one in the photos and a NIB next to it.

This is a plane I had no idea existed before I hooked up here and on Mark's .049 Collectors Group. It apparently came out when I was occupied with being married and buying land for a house.

While I've been a little obsessed with it, it 's STILL (for me) not the Holy Grail of stuntable RTF's that Larry Renger's beautiful blue-wing ME-109 was back in the mid 70's (still waiting in the the bushes for that one).

Anyway, it's engine has at least 30 minutes run time, and acted like it's gonna be a runner, so I'll test fly it today if the winds will lay and the head & chest cold I picked up in Ohio will give me a chance.

Post  RknRusty Fri Feb 17, 2017 11:45 pm

If I had ever known there was such a thing as the Hyper Viper, I would have surely bought one. But it obviously, like Kim, it came on the scene while I was out of the hobby other than a flight once every year or two. Otherwise I'd no doubt have a box of the surviving castor-gummed pieces lying around somewhere. I would love to have one to modify with a TD(or an AME .061) and win trophies at 1/2A Day in Huntersville every year.

How big is the fuel tank in it, and how much does it weigh? What about the control rod, is it stiff enough to do the job without flexing?

I'll weigh it and measure the tank today. The pushrod is just wire, but looks pretty substantial. As always, I have regrets after-the-fact, and my only one with the Dayton trip is that I didn't go ahead and get the second Viper for experimenting.

Since the one I have is a runner, it will probably get some engine swapping...maybe one of Matt's or Bernie's little monsters...just to see what it will do.

Yeah, I'm not sure of the exact time when this plane came out, but it seems like the only new Cox models in that general time frame were the Star Wars models. I almost bought one of the Gold Plated Mini Stunts (may have been about the same time), but remembered how the fuel took the silver plating off the Cosmic Winds and Aracobras, and had no interest in buying a shelf-sitter.

I thought the others of the period came from China, but not for sure.

Anyway, since I kinda hijacked my own thread, I re-titled it to keep all my Hyper Viper posts in one lump.

Also, anyone having some Hyper Viper experience, flying or otherwise, please feel free to check in.

Very nice Cox model the Hyper Viper, dissing it because of China I don't get. No one here bought anything from China?
A few years ago I bought and assembled one from eBay, back then they could be had for 50$. The elevator would hang up on mine when working the bell crank.
A little sandpapering fixed it. Larry Ringer posted about the model on .049 Collectors Group, he even had some hop up tips.
I found them by using the search function. The last two screws in the nose were fun,  lol!

No China-Dissing here. My operations on the hill would be GREATLY, if not totally shut down if I ran a 'China Filter' through the place.

I had seen the Hyper Vipers on Ebay before, but somehow just glided over them 'till I saw the used one at the meet.

Good chance that I'll be adopting one from there, and experiment with some different engines.

The tank holds 1 ounce (I measured twice) and the Viper came in at 11.1 ounces with that fuel on board.

While I was messing with it, I slid a yard stick under the front to give some idea of it's dimensions. I'll take more detailed measurements if you need them.
