Cox Engine of The Month
Sad TD .020 off of eBay.
Sad TD .020 off of eBay.
Picked up this sad looking .020 missing parts in a BIN lot off of eBay. Surprising the crankcase, piston and cylinder was in good shape. The plier marked prop driver and collet couldn’t be saved.
Got it all apart with some heat. The plastic tank and carb body was toast as usual.
Basically got a short block TD .020.
It cleaned up nice with some added parts.

Nice resuscitation Jason!! It is always good to see an abused COX engine get the deserved care for a new life. When I see a COX engine in a sad state like the photos show on the top I always wonder how the maybe most vulnerable COX attribute i.e. the precise cylinder and piston fit for a good compression is affected by the dirt sitting in the exhaust opening? It is bad to even think of the abusing previous owner trying to turn the crankshaft over and damaging the piston cylinder fit. Was the compression in yours saved notwithstanding the condition the engine had sunk into before you bought it? That oldstock thin wall cylinder must have tapered bore ensuring an extended life under normal use conditions.

Good Job Jason , did you reblue the cly. or just cleaned and oiled ? If the price is right you can get some nice results from just a few $$$ in parts.

The cylinder and piston seem to be fine. Similar compression to my other TD .020 engines. Castor oil preserved them.
I did not blue the cylinder. It was just dirty on the outside. Cleaned and oiled was all I did.

RE: Sad TD.020 off eBay
Nice work Jason !!!1 Looks great !!!
I got one about that same shape from a buddy in a trade recently but upon inspection it had a broken crank at the prop driver splines.
I replaced about the same stuff you did with some new spares.
A quick order to Matt at EX Model Engines and a few days later a new TD.020 crank arrived.
I cleaned and assembled it be almost as nice as yours...
I didn't have the tank mount but installed a new flat mount instead..
Maybe I can land one of those TD mounts Brad developed.
Test run will be soon....
Keep it up !!!!!

Thanks for the comments.
You mentioned the .020 crankshafts from Matt. I installed one in a TD .020 that has the small diameter I.D. prop driver. I could not locate a replacement small I.D. prop driver for one that was missing. The fit and finish of the new production crankshaft was excellent. So much so I bought an entire set of parts from Matt to build a TD .020 from new production parts less the piston/cylinder. I plan to check out the performance of it against an original TD .020 by using the same piston/cylinder set. I will use new plastic carb body an tank from MECOA as I like the original look.

The quality of the TD.020 crankshaft was exactly the same as the original that was at least 50 years old.
You're smart to order those items mentioned because you never know when you might need them OR if they may never be available again.
I scored some TD.020 starter springs NIP at the last local swap meet I went to. Those were only I'd seen for sale in many years.
I thought I had a good tank mount in a bag full of stuff I got with two TD.020's from a local Free Flight guy but, all four of them had fire damage especially at the lower fuel line nipple ?? Fire must have been an issue with him.
Just have wait until I need more stuff from Mecoa.

That’s not fire damage. It’s called tank rot and is caused by the chlorine leaching out of the PVC tubing and breaking down the Delrin plastic. I have many tanks where the fuel nipple is rotted away. Always store your plastic tanked .010 and .020 TD engines with the tubing removed from the tank. Randy at Mecoa has probably purchased a small island with the money from the amount of tanks I bought from him over the years.

Wow ...Thanks for the intel on tank rot....I try to learn something new every day and this was it ......
I checked the TD.020's that I have and even though some have had fuel lines connected, all looked totally mint.
The oldest TD.020 is one of the very earliest, I believe, in the plastic bubble pack ( not card board blister pack) and it is so pristine I not going to touch it...
Thanks again for some very worthwhile info....
