Cox .049 Glow Plug Ignitor
Hi, I am relatively new to Cox engines. I was wondering what the best glow plug ignitor is for a .049. I have been using 4 D cell batterys that I soldered parallel. Is there anything you recommend? I found it is very hard to start with anything smaller than 4 D cells.

Re: Cox .049 Glow Plug Ignitor
I think you'll find you have the best battery set up already. The glowplug clip is where you can get as cheap, or as creative as you wish. The one that MECOA sells for Not Cox Engines ( I think marketed for Cubs), but is similar allows you to solder on really flexible 18 ga wire. I've wrecked Cox clips trying to disassemble them in order to replace/lengthen the cheap wire.
Having mentioned the above, if you're doing only Cox .049/.020 single engine planes and use Cox glow plugs exclusively, then there is really nothing wrong with the Cox Glow Plug Clip.

Two D cells should be quite adequate. If it's not, I'd be looking at possible poor connections or excessive resistance in your connector. Personally, I've never had much success with the original Cox style connector. I use a clothes-peg style on 2 D cells with good results.

Re: Cox .049 Glow Plug Ignitor
I use an original Cox glow plug clip with 2 D cell batteries and have no problems at all. I am on my third year with the same batteries this year. Key is using good batteries. As well to note, I disassembled the glow plug clip, carefully removed the wires, and soldered on good quality thicker speaker wire. I then reassembled the clip, put a shim of 1/32" plywood between the positive and negative clips to keep them separated. From there, I mixed up epoxy and poured it in from the back to keep it all good and solid.

Landybuggy-- I'd like to know your technique for soldering together two D cells.

Re: Cox .049 Glow Plug Ignitor
I guess I should also clarify. My batteries are in a 2-D cell holder modified so they sit in parallel. I also bought a 4-DD holder, but have yet to use it.

I made this. Keep glow plug cables short.
