The backplate screws can be overtightened, have you ever seen a backplate with devots around the screw heads. Seen many on eBay, the backplate should be flat.
I used to take the backplate and tank and rub them together with polishing compound after running a wood toothpick in the tank groove. The toothpick would be full of gunk.
With a thin venturi gasket and the polished tank fit the screws only need be snugged up to stop air leaks. Then you only need to worry with the screws leaking air, and the needle valve, and the tank to crankcase. O well, like Led Zep said Ramble On!!
