Cox Engine of The Month
Two New 1/2a Combat Planes

Two New 1/2a Combat Planes
Ok, well, new to me.... These two followed me home the other day. The black and yellow one is a local design I believe from the local control line club. The red and blue one with a 22 1/2" wingspan is a mystery. I swear I had seen it online before, but now cannot seem to find anything. The tail boom design and diamond airfoil should be an easier way to identify it, but am not having any luck so far. With that said, I have just a couple little repairs on the silkspan, then should be ready to go. This will now hopefully light a fire under my butt and get me running some engines again. But it is just another day here with heat warnings! The weather here this year is absolutely crazy in its patterns.

The black and yellow one is simply a 24 1/4" piece of 1/8" x 4" balsa with 1/8" hardwood strip on wing to strengthen and also used as tail booms. Elevator is simply 1/8" x 3/4" balsa.

Re: Two New 1/2a Combat Planes
I can't recall the name of the black and yellow version. The plane was offered in Flying Models I believe. I see a great deal of tip weight on their, what appears to be a 1/2 oz. That's a awful lot of tip weight for that plane if it's double 1/4 oz's. Just for the record, you can't rely on just the adhesive of the weights to hole them onto the plane.
Diamond airfoils need to fly fast, they're poor in design and will go like a bandit in level flight until you begin maneuvering. This is when the speed quickly bleeds off and the plane starts doing funny things. I would fly it and see how it does. It certainly appears to me that the tail moment is too short . Extending the booms would offer a cleaner turn without the plane exaggerating it's movements.

Wow Eric. It has been a while. Somehow, both this topic and your post had evaded me, and did not see it till now as I was cleaning up my model room in anticipation of a winter 'rebuild' from an ARF that my friend had 're-kitted' and sent me. Anyways, the two planes here had resurfaced during the cleaning and purging and prompted me to repost them. It is then when I needed some info that I came back upon this topic.
So firstly, I do very much apologise for not responding to your question a couple months back. It is not like me not to reply to questions asked of me. I have been lazy for a while and just browse the sidebar of 'Latest Topics', and am now thinking it was bumped past what is shown and my laziness finally got the best of me. But I will now answer your question.
Unfortunately the guy I had gotten them from did not know what they were either as they were hand-me-downs from another older gentleman that we both know quite a few years ago who had since passed. So all the help and such that was available is no longer around.
