Both of those made me chuckle. I take solace in the fact that they made millions of these things. That and I have enough engines and spares to last me.

The first could be to allow a larger tank. I cannot see if the all important venturi pipe is present or not.
I have at least 1 tank drilled out in a similar, but much cleaner manner. It runs fine with a fuel hose to an external tank.
The second could be from crank rub wearing out...but the reed retaining part is still there so...huh...
