Rudolph Dumas Pee Wee powered Jon boat

Post  706jim Tue Dec 13, 2022 9:29 am

Thank you for everyone who voted for my Jon boat. Being a lover of the adorable Pee Wee 0.020 engine I would look for any kits designed for that power. These included a duraluminum control line plane, another the Berkeley "Baby Yank" balsa RTF free flight and a number of Guillows kits as well. The Jon boat looked cute and was run a few times at my summer camp. If you look carefully at the picture you can see where the deck was repaired after the boat bumped into a dock and the weight of the engine caused the deck to crack after the impact. I built this model in the early 1970's long before radio control was affordable so the Jon boat went wherever it felt like pretty much like free flight. So stay tuned I have a few more to show in future. Wink

Jim, I have never seen a gold anodized crankcase Pee Wee before. When were these manufactured? Did Cox put those on an RTF, or, were they part of a special promotional sale?

And Maricio, did you do your own gold anodizing of the .051 Tee Dee crankcase?

Rudolph Gold anodized Pee Wee

Post  706jim Tue Dec 13, 2022 10:45 am

Good eyesight! However what you are seeing on the crankcase is burnt castor oil that makes it look gold. As the engine is set up to be a pusher, the usual prop blast over the engine is considerably reduced causing the engine to run hotter than it would in the usual tractor configuration. But yes, it DOES look sort of "gold"!

Rudolph Re: TIEBREAKER-POLL **COX-ENGINE-OF-THE-MONTH** (December 2022)

Post  sosam117 Tue Dec 13, 2022 11:12 am

I had one of this Jon Boats years ago.
Finished over the winter (Christmas present).

That spring I took it over to a friend's house and played around with it.

That friend (Chris Russ) had an idea from my Dumas Jon boat and thought he could do the same with an aluminum flat bottom boat that his parents had behind the house.

Chris modified the flat bottom aluminum boat, made an engine mount in the back, installed a 2-stroke motorcycle engine, with a prop and cage from one of those industrial fans and installed it on the 2-stroke engine.
In the back he had one rudder hook up to turn the boat.

It looked crude but Chris figured it should work like the Dumas Jon boat that I had.

Chris wanted to try it on the river by his house. (It was the end of November)
I suggested to try it in the marsh area (which was covered in snow).

I won out!
We started it up --- gave her the gas and it wasn't moving?
Chris suggested I get out and pull on the rope on the front of the boat to get it going?
I did and it started moving --- right past me knocking me over.
Fortunately, my coat got a good rip in it instead of my skin.

I got up and was watching Chris gliding across the snow.
From my view point I saw Chris move the rudder and the boat tipped over and didn't turn.

Thinking back now, the narrow aluminum boat was top heavy and should have been wider like the Dumas Jon boat.

A pair of young kids who survived a not so bright idea.
We thought it should work like the Dumas Jon boat?

My mom really didn't like Chris so much. I don't know why?
Maybe because of the broken collar bone, gash in the forehead, dislocated fingers (not the same one) and broken hip?
All in about 15yr span when I was young and was with Chris when they all seemed to have happened?

Haven't seen him since he signed up for the military? (1997)

Rudolph Bent cylinder Pee Wee

Post  706jim Tue Dec 13, 2022 11:19 am

I was SO pleased that we were able to resurrect that damaged engine! Took metalworking to a new level using minimal force and a metal mandrel. And because the engine has a new lease on life, it will be the one to get used rather than saved.

As Bob and a few others here have demonstrated, I love engine rescue stories. It seems to make the engine so much more worthwhile to use when the engine has been restored from its previous debauched state. It is not much different from a child born with a hair lip, has a surgeon restore their mouth to a normal healthy one through surgery, so they can live out a normal, healthy life.

From unloved "orphan" to cherished adopted child. Very Happy Lighting The Tree

Rudolph Re: TIEBREAKER-POLL **COX-ENGINE-OF-THE-MONTH** (December 2022)

Post  MauricioB Wed Dec 14, 2022 7:28 am

Hello, in this case it is not a .051 but a .020.
Many years ago there were some houses selling Cox items here in Argentina, all of those houses no longer exist, part of the inventory was bought by different people over time.
A few years ago I saw a sale of some Cox items, and among them were three .020 cylinder, piston and connecting rod assemblies from Cox, a pretty cool find. I immediately bought it.
From there, I ordered the crankcase and crankshaft, needle, venturi and spray bar from Ex Model Engines of the USA, I also ordered the carter body and the glow plug from Cox International of Canada.
I made my own base in aluminum alloy and the throttle control ring in graphited bronze.
Once I had all the parts, I assembled the engine and its operation and ride quality turned out to be wonderful.
Then I'll make a video so you can see it in action!
Thanks again to those who liked the custom Cox .020 R/C!

Mauricio, usted nos dio una historia interesante del motor especial. Very Happy Thumbs Up  No lo supe que el motor fue un tamaño .020.  sunny
You gave us an interesting history of the special engine. I didn't know it was a .020 engine.

También no lo supe que las partes del motor llegaron desde muchos proveedores, la tienda local, las tiendas en los países fuera América del Sur, el Canadá y los Estados Unidos, y propia obra de usted. Also, I didn't know the motor parts came from many sources, the local shop, the stores in countries outside South America, Canada and United States, and your own work. Thumbs Up

¡El motor es una obra fantástica! The engine is a fantastic work! ¡Muy bien! Lighting The Tree

Rudolph I HATE SEEING ENGINES RUN ON TEST STANDS

Post  TD ABUSER Mon Dec 19, 2022 7:35 pm

The poor engine bolted to that 2 x 4  wanted to spend it's life flying through the sky enjoying it's life as free as a bird.
It makes me want to cry when I see model engines that have been doomed to live out their lives in display cases and once every 10 years bolted to a 2 x 4 just so it's Evil Master can watch his poor engine try to break free from its constraints....

You should see the poor little engines in my collection. Some are still stuck in the original package they were placed in over 60 years ago. Waiting ever so patiently for the day someone will rescue them from the package, bolt them to a model and take them to the sky. Each time they are carefully lifted up to be dusted, they think "maybe this will be the time!", but no, hope is crushed as soon as they are sat right back down... maybe another day.
