Re: PAW .049 CONTROL LINE MODEL
Some of the auto body guys use PL 9000? adhesive for gluing the sheet metal on to the rusty cars. It flexes and is apparently strong enough and cheaper than the 3M. A tube may be a bit expensive for a couple drops on a model, and the rest of the tube would dry up soon unless you have another project to use it up.

PL9000...I'll look for it.
My thinking about welding in patch panels has changed drastically since being introduced to those panel adhesives. Where ever you do hot work on a car..it's where you do the hot work that is destined to rust out the soonest if you can't get at both sides of the repair with epoxy type primer. Instead of doing a continuous 100% weld...just weld it here and there where you have access to both sides of the weld...otherwise just fill the unwelded areas with the adhesive and call it good. If you can really take the Leap of Faith and go without any welding...just use sheetmetal screws and enough of that goop to do the job.
Most of my patch jobs require at least some welding because I hammer form the patch to match the contours of the floorpan.
My Jeep Cherokee had perfect fit floor patch panels that fit so good. I could have done the whole repair with no welding...just the goop and a few screws had I known about it.

Thanks Andrew...!
It's better to be lucky than good...I didn't plan it.
I intended to use the shrunken plastic bottle technique....but the can ended up being easier to do, pretty close to just the right size and it is weightless.

Thanks..!
This beer can measures 2 5/8" diameter and the fuselage is 2 1/8" diameter.. so I used ed 4 plywood standoffs to screw the cowl to.
I wish the cowl was only wide enough to leave a 1/8" gap....so maybe I need to bring a dial caliper to the beer store to find a better cowl...?
I'm waiting for some hinges to arrive in the mail...so I think this project will be inactive until at least March 2nd

Hi CP,
Wonderful project, I am learning,
I like how you are going to figure out the leadouts, before putting on the wing tips.
Then, make it a Roma/Bulg arian Bud Light plane...
(the Ir-80 has some nice paint jobs)
In the mean time, do you have blue and yellow paint?
You could make it a UkieRaniane...
Excuse my attempt at humor,
Unless you like it,
Take care,
Have fun,
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks HaD. for the humor and the compliment.
My order of stuff came in from Motion RC.
The prices were like they were at local hobby shops 10 years ago or more.
They had every color of acrylic paint EXCEPT for blue...
They shipped it quickly and for free after I met the $100 minimum.
Not sure what their service would be like to Canada.
I think it was you who mentioned using a "pin vise" for tiny drill bits and Motion sells them for a good price.
Last time I tried to order materials from Tower Hobbies the Operator sounded like someone who was operating a day care business out of her living room in Bangladesh.
I could only understand 1 out of every 3 words spoken so I gave up and hung up.

Just visited Motion RC -- nice site! They appear to have an extensive offering, most items in stock and the pricing is certainly competitive. Thanks for the mention!

The IAR 80...Got a new fin / rudder ...what I originally tried to pass off didn't look enough like the Real McCoy.
This one is more like it.
The MOMENT OF TRUTH was doing the elevator / flap linkage.
I'm a little bit nervous about the push rod.
It starts out as 1/8" aluminum tube at the flap horn end...then telescopes down to 3/32" tubing for a couple inches, then down to 1/16" tubing for a couple more inches, then down to 1/16" solid aluminum wire for the last 5 inches [including overlap at each telescopic joint]
.
All sections of the elevator push rod were scuffed up and glued together with medium CA.
The completed assembly survived my rigorous and vigorous Pull Test and it seems stiff enough.
This plane is configured PUSH FOR UP...and since it is Control Line Stunt there is no such thing as "UP"..so I might as well stop fretting about it and just GO WITH IT.
As you can tell from the photos..I've got about 500 hours of fine sanding and finish work left to do.
The plane hangs nicely from where I've got the leadouts positioned..but I still want to fly it before installing the rounded wing tips.
I want to see for myself how critical the positioning is on a mildly breezy day.

Re: PAW .049 CONTROL LINE MODEL
Finally....
covered with SIG medium silkspan ..SIG nitrate dope
some flaws in the tissue job were addressed with the help of Minwax stainable wood putty, my index finger, more dope and numerous slits made with the #11 blade to make the loose tissue submit to my will...especially in the concave areas.
The OD Green and brown are Tamiya Acrylic....lacquer...?
I know you are all in awe of how artistically the camo motif was executed..it's a gift I guess.... H^^
I don't know how wise it was to do this .....but instead of using Tamiya thinner at $500 / gallon I used 91% Isopropyl alcohol as a thinner
I have Brodak Butyrate Clear on order along with "flat" butyrate dope thinner
Rumanian IAR 80 Fighter decals are available in 1/72 scale.
I might try my hand at making my own 6 TIMES LARGER insignias to dope onto the plane before I hit it with fuel proof dope....
but
What would be the best material to make a DIY DECAL out of..then maybe apply with dope to the top side of the wing panels...?
I plan on many bumps and bruises for this plane while I try to learn to fly a recognizable pattern and DO plan on building another IAR 80 once I get a chance to wring this one out.

Thanks..!
..no round wingtips until I find the best leadout position.
If there proves to be ample power to do all the stunts..then I'll add rounded wing tips and this way I wont need to make the leadouts adjustable when a more "educated" version of the plane is built.

Re: PAW .049 CONTROL LINE MODEL
At this point it needs a coat of fuel proof dope...a couple insignias, a better looking cowl and a better looking canopy.
I should try to find a beer can that looks more "Army Issue" .
There is actually a malt liquor called "CAMO"....
a now defunct brand called "SCHMIDT" had a "limited release" camoflague design on their cans IIRC .
The plane weighs 10.5 ounces, more like 11 ozs with a coat of fuel proofer and a few pennies for wingtip weight.
I have no idea what 13,000 and a 6.3 x 4 prop can deliver..I want to be able to fly the Stunt Pattern from a swiveling Lazyboy recliner with a drink in my free hand..

Re: PAW .049 CONTROL LINE MODEL
Hi CP,
Looking great. I like the flap/elevator ratio...
(I have only been able to do a 3leaf, overhead cloverleaf, so far... squares and triangles seem too impossible to try.)
Yet !
I have seen BalsaBeavers do them...
A fellow r/cScaleCombat pilot invented DollarStore decals:
-a roll of white 'peel and stick' shelf liner, various markers, roll of thin clear packing tape.
Do your marker 'stuff' , cover with the clear, cut out with scissors, peel, then stick.
Lasts longer than a Cox sticker.
From 15ft away, looks great.
10ft away still very good.
5ft away, any kid could do it.
And they did. His young kids did it.
Works in the film industry,
Art is a perspective, as far as anyone can see.
the Cool part?
My 95yr old Dad cannot remember running the diesels, Mum remembers washing the 'stink' out.
Your results will vary,
Take care,
Have fun,
'Relatively Stinky',
Dave

It'll be interesting to see......what the exhaust spray pattern is coming out of that cowl. Also how long will that flimsy cowl will last before it vibrates itself to death.
I'm not going to invest any time in painting the cowl until I see proof that it will last for awhile.

Hi CP,
Heat gun, shrunken down pop bottle cowls are the best.
Expert pilots with shiny new planes, are actually 50/50. (ask anyone)
There is no Tamyia laquer paint, I know of. Must be Acrylic.
DollarStore acrylics are like 100 grit.
Tamiya paints are like 1,200.
Have fun,
I like a good brush, over spraying. (pun intended)
Take care,
Dave

TD this is what i use for decal reproduction , you still need to fuel proof then works with inkjet printer slid off after spraying a sealer on them so don't melt away when put in water >> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDN4YXM?

Thanks for the link to that stuff.
I'll see if my local copier service can work with it.

Here is a link to Goozgog's FW 190 D9 powered with a very happy TD .049 and 6x3 prop.
Pretty much a perfect engine run until it quits with his DIY fuel tank

Re: PAW .049 CONTROL LINE MODEL
Hello TDA,
Thanks for posting the link to the video.
The video does show how capable a TD powered
plane can be BUT it's a miserable pattern.
I'm embarrassed by my bad flying.
My excuses are that this was the plane's first full
pattern and I'm wearing rubber boots!
I'm getting used to the 2 inch line spacing at the
handle where the Spectra lines are passing between my
middle fingers. It works OK but feels different.
Another thing I'm learning in the video is that the
drag of the landing gear makes outside turns tighter than
inside turns. It's just part of a 9 oz plane and low power.
The burbling was solved with with a needle adjustment.
Generally the TD runs very well with 15% nitro and a
sleeved down venturi. It's turning 15,000 rpm.
Hopefully this will forewarn Chuck.
Cheers! - K.

Wow!! I must be daft as a turtle and twice as slow!!
I visit the RCU forum often, but not as frequently as CEF. Obviously, there are many posters, myself included, who post in both forums with similar names. However, I just made the connection this morning between combatpigg (RCU) and TD Abuser (CEF) -- thanks to the pictures of the Rumanian IAR 80. Boy, do I feel like a dummy.

Makes it easier to recognize the posters if they used the same name on all their favorite sites. I've had to ask if "So and So" here is the same as "who-he-is" over "there." I've been wrong a few times. It is almost a game for me to try to track the different ones over the last few years. Sadly, I can't remember who I made the connections with.
