PT-19 3D printing
Greetings all.
I am a SERIOUS PT19-a-holic! (actually, all things Cox!)
I have a couple, and they are so dear to me: I cannot even think about risking flying one again, after introduction to my first one, at age 8, way back in 1974!
I have been designing machinery (3D CAD) for the motor industry for close on 35 years, and a few years ago I got into 3D printing...
Recently a friend gave me a very sad PT-19...
The front of the fuselage was severely damaged (by a fuel fire), it was missing its pilots, Elevator, Rudder, engine mounting plate and the wing was in 3 pieces....
The recent chatter about Mecoa producing PT-19 parts is exciting, but I won't hold my breath...
I visited their website, seems like mere "click-bait" at the moment..
So, it occurred to me to try to 3D print the missing parts first: Engine mount plate, Elevator and a Rudder.
First, I had to design an "exact copy" of the parts, using my 3D cad software, SolidWorks.
Here is my design for the Elevator ...
I then had to figure out how to section each part in order to print them, as, 3D printing is not as simple as "click and print"...

Re: PT-19 3D printing
Very nice thumbs up!
For CL could print a airfoiled wing for better handling, stunts and landings.
Possible conversion to transform into park flying RC 4ch.

Re: PT-19 3D printing
Hubba hubba hubba! I sure do like this.
Maybe I tried the wrong CA, but I used The Trademark CA in the white/green bottle decades ago to attempt a Stuka rehab. The glue failed the minute raw fuel got in it. I do know there are CAs marketed for hobby work, so I'm sure this laminated surfaces thing will work out...I do hope so, and watch with bated breath!

Re: PT-19 3D printing
So, I have a very old fuselage, that uses a standard tanked Babe Bee, but I could'nt find an engine mount plate...(must be early sixty's)
I had to 'wing it' as far as my design goes, by looking at online photos of them an replcating what I saw...
I will tackle the fuselage (for the later models) that use a horse shoe back plate next....

Hi Howard,
How is that plastic for model technics gn15 fuel and being brittle please ?
Internet really c@£p here and I only have s cheapo mobile internet phone for this stuff.
Still waiting for your pictures to come thru, but in town, a bus ride away I have access to lightning fast real computers with big screens and A4 printers, in the public library.
Pm me your email address please as Comms are so much easier that way.
I have what I think is an engine mount which I will photograph and post later.
I have two white wings that had red eagle like stickers on them.
Back later..

Re: PT-19 3D printing
Glow fuel has no effect on PETG plastic. It is however a little more brittle than original. Be that as it may, I can also print the parts using ABS, or even carbon fibre reinforced ABS ! (just much more expensive)
Yeah, that little Eskort was my very first car, a 1974 1300 L, which I bought second hand in 1984!

Re: PT-19 3D printing
Nice project! We looked into it about a year ago, maybe more now, but ultimately ran into issues with the print finishes. In my opinion the smaller parts turned out okay, but a couple samples of the wing had problems getting the angles right. Maybe something to revisit as quality improves with the printing process.

Re: PT-19 3D printing
its great that you have looked into it Matt were it possible at affordable prices it woud be way cool how I would love to fly a plastic pt-19 again. and maybe this time empty a fuel tank without crashing

Re: PT-19 3D printing
The basic idea was to use a Babe Bee engine with an older style mount and keep the fuselage as limited as possible. Probably slots for either ready available pilots to slide in or a printed pilot that could be painted.
I'd certainly consider giving the project another look if there was interest. Biggest issue is I'm not sure how many people it would appeal to given surface finishes would not be as good as that of an injection mold.
Cost is another consideration, but don't believe that would be the limiting factor ultimately.
