This thing's running at 30,400 RPM on the ground. What kind of RPM is it hitting when it's in a dive? Good grief!

I love watching those. One of my favorites is the guy that primes his Cyclon spinning it with the starter, swings the prop up to the beginning of compression and flips the switch on the glow driver, and zing, it's turning those scary RPMs.

Sure you love it 'cause he uses a Cox glow clip,

Really amazing with a FAI fuel (80 % methanol, 20 % castor oil),

Those two laps right at the end of the tank. On the backside down wind that motor frees up and comes alive. Wonder how warm the leading edges get with that thick english air. Probably a few ticks faster on a "thinner" day.

Does anyone know what kind of RPM these engines hit when flying and there's no load on the engine? I just can't believe the high RPM they run at. I'm used to engines that run at 3600 RPM, not 36,000. Even at 30,000 that's 500 revolutions per second - or 1000 piston strokes in the blink of an eye. That's moving! And some people view these engines as toys.

I don't know what the rev with an un lead engine. Remember that a F3D engine is definitively not a toy. "That looks about right" is gone, all is perfect. And between two flights these engine are often dismantled (almost the head) to check the tuning setup... It's not a toy.... In an F3D event you have 60 second before the race, for starting your engine (most pilot start 30 second before the start flag) and a race is about 65 second long.

sorry for my bad english...
