Re: Cox outboard boat motor
From the looks of it's a TD .049 or .051

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
It could be either because both are externally identical. The way to identify a .051 is to look for the circular ring around the piston. No ring? It's a .049.

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
Usually when the carb body is red it is assumed an .051 when it's black .049. However, Dave you are correct in that parts are easily swapped between the two therfore, the ring around the piston will rule out any doubt.
Performance is the same so in the end it doesn't really matter.

Here is another made by Dennis Fadden using a TD .010
Many amazing small engines are shown here, some with Cox parts, use the links to fully explore this web site.

As a footnote to Ron's comment:Cribbs74 wrote:Usually when the carb body is red it is assumed an .051 when it's black .049. However, Dave you are correct in that parts are easily swapped between the two therfore, the ring around the piston will rule out any doubt.

The distiction between the otherwise identical TD .049 and .051's was made for AMA class purposes: the .049 is a 1/2A while the .051 is Clas A. So a single plane could be flown in either class depending on the engine used.
(Why do I know these things?)

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
My concern with the outboard shown would be the venturi facing prop wash.
A good way to suck in water especially on launching.

My thoughts as well. Not sure how you would solve that, but the .010 engine is as cool as it gets. AndySuperDave wrote:My concern with the outboard shown would be the venturi facing prop wash.A good way to suck in water especially on launching.

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
Cox made a prototype outboard motor that looked like a Mercury Marine outboard including the engine cover. A picture of it is in the Cox Model Engine Handbook.

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
If the venturi was fitted with a forward-facing "snorkel" and bracket, it would solve that problem. It could be made of aluminum tubing and fastened to the venturi with a short silicone tubing "sleeve" and sm. tie-wraps. At speed; it might even produce a "ram-air" effect!anm2 wrote:My thoughts as well. Not sure how you would solve that, but the .010 engine is as cool as it gets. don't forget coffee...

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
Here's a couple from my photo archives... The "Atwood" positions the venturi "forward"... while the "Wen-Mac's" faces rearward. The "drive-units" look to be nearly identical.

They are nice looking outboards, been thinking about starting an outboard collection myself. Very cool.

Re: Cox outboard boat motor
...when I was a little kid (couple months ago) I had a really neat scale plastic speed boat with a looking electric motor, metal outboard. I've always thought it would be neat to find one like that again, but I probably wouldn't want to pay for it.
